I am a male in my late twenties. I've had gynecomastia for quite a while, in both breasts, but it's far more pronounced on the right side (my right breast is at least triple the size of my left).
I've had a couple of physicians examine it, and I've examined it myself, and since there's no pain and no lump, I have not yet been able to get a doctor to say "you should consider getting that thing lopped off" - despite how leading my questions have been.
I'm on testosterone replacement therapy (a years-long rendezvous with oxycontin in my late teens appears to have royally fucked my hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), which might be exacerbating the situation, but I'm not entirely sure whether the testosterone is making it worse (it's listed as a possible side effect).
So basically I have something approaching a C cup sized tit on the right side of my torso, that is quite out of proportion to the rest of my body. I am slightly overweight, and my left breast looks about right for my size, but the right one is blatantly WAY too big.
There isn't much that I can wear and feel comfortable in; shirts that fit my chest comfortably end up being far too big and baggy for the rest of me, and shirts that fit everything else don't fit my chest.
Even the personal trainer I have been working out with has told me that she doesn't think I'll ever be rid of an overly large right breast without surgery.
How can I get insurance to cover such a surgery? It doesn't seem to matter to the insurance company that gynecomastia increasess my risk of developing breast cancer by a couple orders of magnitude; I just want this thing lopped off, and am hoping that someone can suggest a strategy that can help me make that happen.
If I had the money I would not hesitate even for a second; I'd be making an appointment with a plastic surgeon tomorrow. I just want to be able to wear a shirt comfortably again, and go out in public to hang out with my friends without feeling constantly self-conscious. What can I say to my doctor(s) that will encourage them to suggest surgery - and, by doing so, make the operation something my insurance covers?
Thanks for any and all advice.
As an aside: I've even had a couple of dreams where I've chopped the damn thing off in a variety of ways. Probably a result of watching too many zombie movies & TV shows combined with a tremendous desire to have this THING OFF OF ME. It doesn't even really feel like it's a part of me - it's foreign and awful and needs to go.
