Living with a terrible singer
    #17256933 -

What if you lived with someone who was a really terrible singer, and they ask you what you think about one of their awful karaoke recordings?

I'd tell them they're bad at singing.

Someone has to tell them, at some point, that they can't sing.

Family members and the like are usually too emotionally invested to do so, and this selfish behavior of telling someone they're good when they aren't commonly creates horrible beasts that terrorize the population with bad singing.

They probably won't believe you though, cause they've been hearing that they're good from family members for years, but oh well. It's the right thing to do.

Let them know that they aren't going to make a career out of it but I say let them sing if they really enjoy it. It really sucks to have someone talk down to you for singing when you enjoy it, whether you're great or you suck ass. Living with someone that sings around the house is something you will probably need to get used to.

Is this a college style roommate or a significant other?

Yeah it might suck to hear it, but it's doing them a favor if they're going around showing people recordings and expecting compliments.

if you want them to stop(provided you have a bad voice) you should chime in and sing along w/them  everytime they are singing. this will annoy them so much that it will condition them to not sing around you in fear of you joining in w/your bad voice.
but if you simply want to inform them of their lack of "talent" you should tell them that they should go on American Idol and that they would get famous like all the other jokes that have been horrible in tryouts. this should get the point across.

Significant other. She has improved, but man...still bad. Sometimes I hear her going and just laugh my ass off in the other room.

I'd tell them I didnt like it, then I would add "its nothing personal, I just respect you enough not to lie to you" to make them feel better

EDIT: Oh. significant other? fuck that then tell her she's good

suggest lessons.  since she likes to sing so much, a directed outlet can be presented as an extention of her talent rather than as a doubt.  the local community college will offer voice in the music department.  if she has "improved" she can improve more with proper direction.  she will also learn her limitations as a singer.  nothing like a graded performance to bring perspective to the performer.

avoid private teachers though. they lie to keep the money coming

Yeah, that's what I thought. I have to deal with other people who tell her it's great though. I wish other people would stop encouraging it because that caterwauling, at times, makes me cringe.

This is a sharp idea.

I was typing up a post saying fuck those other guys opinions and tell her anyways, but this seems better.

learning about the mechanism of sound making and other "formal" aspects of singing is fun and will definitely help her find why she likes to sing.  something as simple as knowing how to open the mouth properly can make a huge difference.

LOL That would just be wrong of me to do. Sounds like she's sitting on a washing machine that's off balance and in the "spin" cycle most of the time. Either that, or sounds like she swallowed a vibrator.

Tell her she is a superstar, and you must send her recordings to the record label :hehehe:

No just kidding.  I say learn to love it and let her sing.  Ask her to stop for the time being if it is bugging you, but be polite and make it clear that you just want peace and quiet, not her to stop forever.

I'd say be straight with her, but encourage her to get lessons, do exercises and get good. Be supportive of the endeavour without lying to her. It's not massively hard to learn to sing, people just seem to get really deluded about ability.

If you guys can't afford lessons, there's plenty of information on singing exercises and warm-ups online. She might initially be angry with you, but I say fuck lying to someone to spare their feelings. Respect her enough to be flat out truthful.

Trust me, if this is a woman (and you saying "significant other" suggests either she has a minge, or wishes he did) it is their equivalent of farting. Let them sing badly, it keeps them happy.

I had a gf that was terrible at singing. It made me cringe.
