Questions about bitcoins in regards to anonymity

I'm wondering how one could successfully exchange their national currency for bitcoins, send bitcoins to someone in exchange for something, and have that something mailed to one's residence, all while maintaining complete anonymity?

Is it even possible?
Apparently you can't log in to an mtgox account using a TOR browser/proxy network.  But, you CAN send money to mtgox through a TOR browser via bitinstant. :strokebeard:

I have no experience with this stuff but I'm considering doin some thangs... I'm trying to research it but with my lack of experience I'm not sure what all is involved.  I'm not going to take the chance unless I know for certain nothing will stick to me.

Anyone have experience in this?

I understand the need for a private email service such as hushmail.com, but it's not very TOR-friendly either.  It just seems like when I find something that will support my anonymity, something that will sabotage it arises dependently.  Someone please show me to the backdoor.

Receiving items to ur postal address is the weak link in the system. At all other steps of the process its possible to protect ur anonymity to a relatively high degree. But when it comes to actually receiving items it gets a bit tricky. Obviously always use an alias. If u can have it delivered to a different address that cant be linked to u and pick it up from there then that is ideal, but swinging that arrangement might not be simple.

I've heard PO Box is always a good idea, but I'm not even that far along yet.  I'm still trying to figure out how to exchange money for bitcoins, and to send those bitcoins to someone who gets an address from me.

So far I've got...
Start hushmail.com account [although you can't log in with TOR, meaning mac address might be traceable]
Start mtgox.com account using the hushmail address [everything in above brackets applies here too]
Use bitinstant to send funds to mtgox [this transaction is TOR protected]

I'm trying to make as much sense as I can out of this page:

But that only accounts for part of my concern.
Why can't you use TOR network to access these places that are pro-anonymity?  Or HOW can you, rather?

I'd just like to have a long discussion about this with someone experienced.  I need to understand the entire process well enough that I KNOW no one could possibly tie me to any of the steps.  It has to be possible - people have apparently been doing it safely for a while now.  I just need to speak with one of those people.

Another service you'll want to make use of is instawallet.org. Use it as an intermediate step (or multiple steps) between your MtGox account (since you've chosen to go with MtGox) and your seller.

So a transaction would be something like:

MtGox balance -> Instawallet temp wallet 1 -> Instawallet temp wallet 2 -> seller's wallet.

I dont think it matters so much that you cant access MtGox with Tor. Having an account on MtGox is in no way illegal, and when your funds leave MtGox for the first instawallet address they are squaky clean.

Then use tor to access your 'instawallet temp wallet 1', and to move your funds to additional temp wallets, before making the final transaction to the seller.

I use instantbit to give cash at 711 or cvs directly to my bitcoin address, don't know how safe that is... :shrug:

Since you've pointed out my choice in MtGox, is there a better alternative given the anonymity factor?

I just know that it's the most popular, I haven't gotten around to checking into the alternatives yet.  It seemed like a pretty decent choice, since you can buy or sell btc there and it's basically an eWallet in and of itself.

I really am a n00b when it comes to this stuff.  I've made no choices yet, I'm just trying to get a flow of the basics.  Once I understand exactly how this process works I'll know what to look for and what to shy away from.  As of now I hardly know what a bitcoin is.

I would buy directly from somebody or a group that sells outside the exchanges.  Not so much for safety but for value and ease.  Scope out the bitcoin forums, they have sections dedicated to getting bitcoins.

Wow, so definitely going with tormail.  Thanks for that.

I've been hearing alot of people say TOR isn't safe to use from your own OS.  I've heard mention of putting a virtual maching on a flash drive and running TOR from that.  Is this really necessary?  I'm already learning PGP and AES.  I don't exactly know how to set up a virtual machine, but if it requires ubuntu or learning linux and I truly need it, I'll probably just give up the whole project.

So is that just an extra precaution or is using TOR through my OS really a dangerous thing to do?

If you really want to be safe yes, a boot CD or USB will help you be secure as the only memory you will be writing to is RAM, which erases when you power down.

But to be honest thats only really nessacary if you plan on selling or buying weight, if your just buying a small personal amount you wont get much problems from LE even if a package gets seized(highly unlikey for small amounts) normally just a 'love letter'

Cool thread. I know this is a complete newb question but my computer isnt letting me access tor mail onion. Says the address was taking to long.. anyone have a quick fix for this?
