hydrated lime is a great way to ensure nothing grows from a casing. with a ph around 11, a little goes a longgg way. and you certainly shouldnt try injecting anything to raise the ph. if you manage to get ahold of some dolomite lime or regular crushed limestone, you'd idealy want to mix it in when you are making the casing. but you can probably get away with sprinkling on a light layer and just allowing the misting water to soak it in the casing. not a failsafe way to do it though.

I'll second that. Hydrated lime is very alkaline. I get a five point pH change with less than a teaspoon of lime per four liters of peat-based casing material. It works well pre-casing because you can stir the casing material to distribute the lime, but trying to sprinkle it on a casing is almost certainly going to end up with hot spots where the pH shoots way up and other spots where it doesn't change at all. That's a good recipe for failure. Dolomitic lime is more mild and might work, but it contains a lot of magnesium which has been shown to retard mushroom growth. Crushed limestone might work too. Sprinkle on top of the casing and mist. It'll dissolve slowly and over time will drive the pH up a bit. Good luck! -Diploid Edit: Quote:

While not optimal, a pH of 6.5 will still grow mushrooms. I'd leave the casing alone.
