How in the holy hell can you be jailed for failing to predict a fucking earth quake? Pretty
crazy shit. Well heres the story....

A court in the Italian city of L'Aquila has handed down verdicts to six scientists and one government official charged with manslaughter for failing to give sufficient warning of a fatal earthquake that hit in 2009.

­The case was built around a meeting the seven defendants, all members of a commission on natural disasters, held in the city of L’Aquila on March 31, 2009, in which they told residents there was no cause for concern after a series of minor shocks had rocked the city in the preceding six months.

It took Judge Marco Billi slightly more than four hours to reach the verdict.

The seven – all members of the National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks – were judged to have provided "inexact, incomplete and contradictory" information about the danger of the tremors felt ahead of 6 April 2009 quake, Italian media report.

Less that a week later, a 6.3-magnitude quake reduced most of the medieval city to rubble, leaving 309 people dead and more than 60,000 homeless.

Scientists worldwide had slammed the trial as ridiculous, saying that science has no way to predict quakes. More than 5,000 scientists signed an open letter to Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in support of the defendants.

They should jail the earth for quaking and killing those people. Next thing you know they will jail cops away for not predicting the next murder of a serial killer.

Seems fair to me. They said it was fine to stay when it obviously wasn't. I'm pretty sure you can predict a short ahead of time due to increasing temors/vibrations.

I mean if your WHOLE JOB is for prevention and you can't even do it right and cause hundreds of people to die.... yeah, I do think its their fault for not giving a proper warning.

Of course we'd need to see their report and see if it was actually accurate, but this is saying they gave a false report

Sure you can, if you're having severe tremors. Otherwise you are right, you can't. But they were having tremors, and they said it should be fine...

I dunno, maybe it isn't fair. I don't know. I'd have to know all the details before deciding.

You really can't predict earthquakes.  That's like rule 1 in seismology.

You can predict shock-waves and tremors from quakes that already happened, but not the quake itself.

Apparently Giampaolo Giuliani did and they all ignored him link

I think this could be part of why these guys were in trouble as  Giampaolo was trying to warn people and the guys that got arrested were calling bullshit on his data.

I may be wrong though, who knows?

well the key is in the details, they told these people "no cause for concern".  Then, they died.

I don't think they should be hung or anything, but its somewhat similar to malpractice with doctors and such.  They failed to properly inform people, and they died because of it.  Im sure none of them would have moved, but they deserved a chance.

They say they can't be predicted, but there was a series of shockwaves.  Any rational person would inform them that more could come and they could be bigger, any earthquake could be a concern.  This is their job, yet they would have been better informed if they weren't even there because most people might start thinking about these quakes, but instead they were "comforted" by the scientists.

I see your point, but six years in jail doesn't seem like a just punishment. That should be reserved for people that need to be removed from society. These guys just need to be ripped of their scientific credentials.

then why do they have a National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention
of Major Risks... seems that they've defrauded the italian government out of
money and it resulted in the deaths of hundreds. 6 years for fraud and
manslaughter... seems fair enough since their commission claimed to forecast
and prevent things such as earthquakes
