that is the evolution of open-market/semi-proprietary technologies and hardware.
what makes you think the iPod is no different from the walkman? remember when shit like walkmans were 80$ or more? and at that time, would you have believed that you would be able to buy them for 6$ 18 months later?

Yeah, but it will take a bit longer than one year to reach that point.

No way by 2007. 2008-2009 maybe they'll be real cheap, but they cost more to make than a walkman so there's no chance you'll be able to pick one up for $10.

And now the iGame is being designed so I'm guessing they'll stay the same price for a while.

I will bet, seriously bet, USD currency, that by January 2007, you will see iPods which sell for 30 dollars in stores.
why? well, all it takes to drastically reduce the price of an iPod would be a slightly better improvement. I also think that they might even start to be given away for free soon. Like cellular phones, if you agree to a certain service, they have no problem giving you one.

Maybe the current generation of iPods, but knowing Apple, they will continue to put out new "must-have" products once every few months which will continue to sit at the top of the price-curve.
You will probably see items that have bigger screens, WiFi connections, better video support, more storage, etc, etc, etc.

well, of course, all I can speculate on is the current generation of iPod, but I can garauntee you that by January of 2007, the price to performance ratio relative to the best iPod right now will drop by 66% or more.
People like HELLA dislike this because they spent 150$ on their iPod.

No, actually, I dont own an iPod, not on Myspace, and dont have any tattoos.... Im such a loser by todays standards, but if there is one thing that I am learned on, is evolution of proprietary and non-proprietary systems.
Look at DVD players. Remember when they were 200-300 dollars? now you can buy them for 40 bucks. Walkman/discman? any of this look familiar?

Yeah of course the price of shit like iPods goes down with time, but a lot of people would rather shell out a few extra notes for the technology soon after it becomes available instead of waiting a couple years for it to become more affordable.
I wonder how cheap iPods will actually go.. I can't see anything less than $50 for the basic model. That's a perfectly reasonable price for a decent mp3 player.

The Discman replaced the walkman - thus, that?s why the walkman is now bargain-bin
The MP3 player has replaced the Discman, thus - the Discman is now bargain bin.
Also, as technology increases and becomes more common place, the prices drop ? like you said, DVD players used to cost like, $500 bucks, but now they can be gotten for $50 if not less. Likewise, HD-DVD players are starting to come out, and cost damn near a grand if I recall correctly, but as time goes on ? they too will drop down to $200, $100, and eventually to the $50 price range --- its not exactly that ?amazing? or insightful of a prediction to think that in a few years, that MP3 players will follow the same price trend.
Hell, even now ? the price of iPods are much cheaper then they were when they first came out.
All around, I am agreeing with you, but likewise I cant help but think ?so-what??. The computer I spent like, 2k on two years ago, I could probably get for like, $600 right now. The cell phone I got 5 years ago for a few hundred, I can now get for free with a 1 year contract and is worth maybe all of like, $25 bucks
Saying prices on electronic goods is going to drop in a few years, is like saying the sun is going to rise tomorrow ? it?s a given and no surprise to anyone.
And, in 2007 ? I am sure Apple will have some new generation of the iPod with new features and new gadgets and new ?must-haves? which will still be at the top of the price curve, of which people still buy. Chances are we?ll see the 5g nano?s for $50 bucks in the bargain bin, but who knows, maybe in 2007 they will have a 60g SuperMicro with a projection screen that will be the ?trendy-geek must-have item of the year? and will be flying off the shelves for top dollar come holiday season.

*note: That being said, hell - there are still Discmans which you can buy new that cost over $100 bucks (why anyone would do this is beyond me, but meh), but : slimmer, better skip protection, better battery life, play different file formats (ie: can play CDs with MP3s on them), etc, etc, etc.
And fawk - just look at the shaving blade industry, they are just bloody razors, has there really been that much advancement in the shaving industry? and yet - every year they find new ways to market essiently the exact same product year, but still keep prices pretty much the same.
