Hello, I believe I want a TV Turner card? I want to convert some VHS tapes that I have and put them onto DVD. I also want to run a mini DV into it and record directly onto my drive.
Should I look for a TV Turner card or a Video Capture card??? Which one should I look for and what are some capabilites that are recommended?
Thanks a bunch! Lana

I love all in wonder line of cards, good advice! A Radeon 9800 AIW may cost you something like 500USD, it's the top of the top for desktop PCs, in terms of gaming performance and multimedia editing capabilities. Cut on the gaming performance (but still good indeed) and buy ATI Radeon AIW 9000, you may cut down even more and go for a AIW 7500 if you find one but games may become slow. They also have great software, go for it. If don't want to buy a new video card go for something like pinnacle.

If you want to input miniDV simply buy an IEEE1394 port (firewire). There is bunch of graphics cards; nvidias and ati's that can capture video, but you are obviously going to pay for the 3D technology as well, with one of those. Your best bet would be to search online for a "video capture card" then comparsion shop on pricegrabber.com(or a site like it). I have found that many stores (best buy, circuit city etc.) don't generally carry very good video capture devices. They are mostly for family use and the resolution sucks, also they don't work with well, if at all with really good video editing programs like adobe. The best VC device that you would come across at a best buy or store like it would probably be the "dazzle" port, however, if you buy this make SURE the resolution on the side of the box is listed as at least 720X480 because some dazzles have a shitty res. of 320X160 or somthing shitty like that. Peace.

http://www.videoguys.com/
I remember going to this site years ago. They had some amazing advice, like things to look for, reviews, etc. They compare by price range too. =]
Read that 'desktop video guide' or whatever on that site.
Make sure you read up on anything before you buy it. This is very important with video capture cards.
(and you always get what you pay for btw.....so $51 aint necessarily a good thing) =P
