Any other TAs?

Next Fall I am going to be teaching my very own intermediate Spanish class. Have any of you guys done the TA deal? How was it? I am only 23, will it be awkward teaching people twice my age? What do I do if someone is annoying, just kick them out of class?

I'm a TA. I currently teach labs for astronomy and physics 101. The classes mostly consist of non-science majors who don't give a shit about physics or astronomy. Some students like to complain and those are the worst. I just grit my teeth and move on to help students who actually give some sort of effort.

I think if somebody is annoying you should just humiliate them somehow. I wouldn't kick them out of class unless they are being disruptive.

I've TAed quite a bit.  I doubt you will ever get to the point where somebody has to be kicked out.  If so I would hope you have some kind of paper trail about the person to back you up...  I've never had that happen but once one of my fellow TAs did.  She was intimidated by some jack ass who was overbearing and reports got filed, etc, etc.

Otherwise its a great job, grading sucks though.

The older students are usually fine.  But you do get the occasional one who already knows everything and tries to teach you...  I have no problem shooting people down though.  :grin:

Oh word? I always thought TA stood for Teacher Assistant. Back when I attended my elementary school, I always had a TA (that's what we called them) for each grade. Sorry for misunderstanding :doh:

I TA'ed last semester for a general chemistry class. Never had to teach anything by myself, though.

That said, it was certainly an interesting experience... it felt weird giving academic guidance to people who were significantly older than me, and one individual in particular was so insecure about it that he actually got physical with me at one point. This is in a fucking lab with 6M solutions of NaOH sitting around-- brilliant, really fucking brilliant. In retrospect I should have done something about it.

It's a great experience though, good resume material and a great way to hammer down the basics for yourself. Good luck. :yesnod:

that's what it stands for, actually. I guess there are TAs in elementary schools. we called them aides.

I'm a little nervous but mostly excited. I think I stand to bring a fresh philosophical perspective to linguistics when I eventually get into that. My prof liked my presentation a lot and wants me to go to a conference with her
