Also, I see a lot of videos of nitrous organizations selling at festivals. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE hyperventilates their nitrous in these videos. It is so angering to me that first off these people are that stupid, but that the vendor doesn't just explain to them that they are suffocating themselves.

Huffing nitrous is a breathing exercise for me. I always make sure that I am breathing sufficient air, taking breathing breaks between each lung full and I get twisted from a single balloon without having to hyperventilate with NO oxygen for upwards of a minute while standing.

I have heard of this mod for the last few years and I agree that hippies and people who go to festivals really love their fantasy. I am sure that some of these groups end up being violent etc. but it is obvious that not all of the vendors are like that. Some may be loosely affiliated, but most aren't, this is obvious.

^Depends on where you are. The closer you get to the East Coast, the bigger the influence. And youd be suprised to the lengths they will go to make suer they are the only ones selling it.

Being in Chi. cops are so fuckin crooked, you see them beating up a hippie over a few grams of pot, and then strolling past the tanks, not even looking towards the obnoxiously loud hiss of the tanks. Shit, after Phish @ the UIC, they were running tanks on street corners, no joke.

Also, I have heard alot of times of them selling Auto grade nitrous, being filled with other dangerous chemicals and very impure (obviously) and cheap. I dont buy from tankers anymore, i bring whippits and a cracker, or nothing.

There is not a standard % for food grade nitrous oxide, I called the FDA and had a 15 minute conversation for an hour.  The standards for food grade nitrous oxide are that it has to be used for said application (whipping cream), it has to be free of harmful contaminants, and it has to be made via 1 specific chemical reaction (I forget which one it was).  Its not like USP regulation.  Also, most nitrous oxide you buy from random places that fill tanks is NOT USP nitrous oxide as you can't buy USP nitrous oxide as you need a license to sell USP chemicals  (they don't) otherwise they could be charged with misbranding.  It might still be 99%, but it isn't USP and it isn't sold as USP as USP is a grade for chemicals sold for human consumption.


People that sell nitrous at festivals are fucking scumbags and they are leaches to the scene.  Don't buy there gas if you give a fuck, buy a 2.5 pound tank and bring your own.  That or get a cracker and some chargers.

At wakarusa this year the Nitrous Mafia made a big deal of driving their van down through main event camping. The were driving all slow and had the van surrounded by big dudes all carrying those cylindrical backpacks. Waka is on private property so there are no undoercover police or anything but if security catches you with Nitrous you get kicked out, or they just take it if its a smaller amount. But these guys totally got caught, security just surrounded them and held em off the road until police came, arrested em and drove them all out in a big ass police van. That was my first and only fest but from what I've read and by the arrogant way these guys were carrying themselves I'm glad they got arrested.

Yeah im not worried as long as its only Nitrous Oxide. Auto Grade nitrous is literally filled with other chemicals, and you can taste its and smell it. Yuck.

They add sulfur dioxide to NOS nitrous oxide, its pretty fucking disgusting and will make you sick.

The nitrous mafia is usually very sketchy. After Shpongle on 4/20 the back alleys around the venue were full of tanks and people tweaking out. My other recent encounter was walking through the Phish lot at Star Lake with people telling me "This is a no waiting zone." Fuck you, I'm walking to my car, stop being sketchy.

I like nitrous though. I wish I could get a tank at some point but it seems like it is hard to get one without going through someone shady.

Has anyone heard anything new about these guys or have any new stories about them at festivals? I've seen em at Electric Forest, so surely they make the rounds to most big festivals.

In the past couple years the bigger festivals have really cracked down on tanks being inside.
The mafia is still around though. They frequent show on the east coast mostly. Ive got a friend who is in a sort of "mafia" And he has told me that he has been hitting up all the electronic shows in the philly area/east coast.

it's a damn shame to see them everywhere. People should hang out at concerts and festivals because they love the scene, instead of trying to scare/intimidate others in order to make money at concert they don't even care about.

At the phish show I caught, the sketchy big dudes were walking around doing their thing. Everyone flocking there and buying balloons looked like crack heads. :facepalm:

Well not all mafias are like that.
We all gotta make a living, we all gotta eat.
Unfortunately, some people like to sell gas at shows to make that living.
Im not gonna lie, ive brought a few tanks to shows but ive kinda moved on from that. I brought a tank to a Umphreys Mcgee show last year and watched some dude phish out and smack his head on the pavement. I packed up the rest of my tank and vowed to never sell gas on lot again.
The unfortunate thing is, gas is hippie crack and where there is a demand, there will always be someone willing to feed the demand.

I remember Rothbury 09 when all i could hear at night was the hissing of tanks. Id wake up in the morning and the ground would be littered with balloons everywhere.
When i sold nitrous, i at least had a trash can for balloons so they wouldnt end up on the ground.

At Wakarusa last year i remember they had a NO NITROUS policy.
At Yonder Harvest Fest in 2010 some people cracked off 2 whippit chargers and security came by their camp and told them to GTFO.

Its crazy but i kinda feel it needed to happen.
Nothing wrong with nitrous unless you are spending more time at the tanks then at the shows. Then it becomes a little too much.

i feel like it hasn't been nearly as crazy lately. it seemed to move more in the direction of personal/private tanks where a group of kids will throw down on a tank and rage it in their hotel or apartment or whatever after the show or quietly at their campsite if its at a fest they can get away with it at.

does anyone know if tanks direct is still around, i lost their number years ago? that shit was/is one a hell of a hustle and prob had alot to do with the way things changed (as well as promoters and security cracking down).
