anyone into caving? * 1
    #16716560 -

Being that there are tons of caves here, this seems like a fun hobby to get into that would only require moderately expensive equipment.  I've only been a few times but I LOVE it!  I completely forgot about it until I read a passage in house of leaves about caving.  Anyways, how much would a starting setup be?  At this point, I have no fucking clue where to start so really any advice or stories would be most helpful.  :hook:

I am a experienced spelunker, the coolest cave I've been to is Big Brush in Utah http://mojaveunderground.com/wiki/index.php?title=Big_Brush_Creek_Cave.A friend of mine actually cleared out the lower passage one year when it got flooded. He took me down in the winter so we had to snowshoe in. The mouth of the cave is absolutely enormous and it continues into a ice crystal forest and then a giant cavern. Then there is a squeeze underneath a granite slab into the lower passage that is much tighter yet it goes down miles into the earth, we explored for two & a half hours and still weren't even close to the end.

The important thing is a good headlamp and a spare and spare batteries.

if you're capable of staying put, not a problem but since most trippers cant
for several hours, you could die quite easily in most caves

There are tons of bad ass caves along the two highways connecting Fairbanks to the southern half of Alaska.  I'm going to a permafrost cave tomorrow that the Army Corps of Engineers put in about twenty miles out of Fairbanks for permafrost research.  Should be fun.  The temperature in there is about 10 F right now.  I am pretty excited.

How does one know which caves are susceptible to flash flooding?  That would be some scary shit.

Damn that was fucking crazy.  Good read!

Does anyone have any sources for wild cave locations? It seems like most online resources are no longer active.  I would even be willing to buy a physical map if necessary.  Any ideas?

I'm a somewhat experienced spelunker
I've been to a bunch of the lava tubes in central Idaho.
Also some of the caves in Texas and Oklahoma.

Hotboxing a cave with some friends on entheogens is a unique experience.
You don't wanna do over do it for obvious reasons though

Usually you will find a bunch of trees and sticks washed into the mouth of the ones that do. its a good idea to go in the winter especially big brush because if you are in deep and the weather comes in it would get very hairy.

Lots of caves in Colorado are closed for exploration due to the negative effect of some fungus on the local bat populations

however there is this one old lady i know who was a merry prankster told me about this cave where a little girl fell off the rocks near the entrance 100 feet and land on her feet with no harm. Shes batshit crazy though also told me there where Indian spirits that chill in there.

Pennsylvania has plenty of caves, lots of them close to me..
A few caves in Blair/Torrance have been gated off, but still accessible.

Yeah I saw that.  White something or other fungus.  Is it even worth investigating this hobby in Colorado?
