I made so much money selling candy in middle school.

Exorbitant amounts for a 5th/6th grader.

"Ambitious"? There's still no law against buying two twelve-liter sodas. Now people will drink MORE soda.

Just like with Assault Weapons bans, this will do absolutely zero in helping people not getting fat.  Not that the weapons ban caused people to get fat.  Just that if someone wanted an assault rifle with the proper resources, -cough--cough- MONEY, they could very easily get one or some.

I just wish these politicians would stop interfering with everyone's everyday affairs.

Like Guliani(SP?), Bloomberg is an ass trying to do too much.  Only if he focused on issues that really matter and could make a positive impact on every New Yorker's life.

Exactly like the assault weapon ban. Guns are a tool, they don't kill people; their users do. Saying a gun kills someone is using the same logic as someone saying a spoon made his mother fat.

Back to the assault weapon topic (again), this is the very reason I am currently adding five calibers of MACs to my collection; they're gonna get banned again and they make politicians piss themselves. Now are MACs really practical firearms? No way, but they're sure as hell fun and they make big bro nervous!

Because the softdrink industry is legal, legit, and regulated it's easier to keep track of.  I worked with a market research firm to do research on energy drinks.  They have VERY specific data on what's sold where; down to individual stores and zip codes.

Yes, some things may fall through the cracks, but a huge amount of transactions are tracked and accounted for.

How can this thread get so out of control!? Obviously since you have caffiene added sugar and other addictive chemicals in soda, the people are like slaves to their addiction. Mayor Bloomberg is obviously a hero and should be given a parade.

I think it's the caffeine that makes the sugary drinks addictive.
But there's no way to ban caffeine, people would freak out. Me first.

How do they track fountain soda sales at specific location in anything other than volume of syrup used?  Like how do they determine whether a 32oz cup or two 16oz cups were used to sell the same amount of beverage, or whether it was a new drink sold or a refill for a customer?  I'm honestly curious because if there's a way I think it's interesting, not trying to be argumentative.  Energy drinks are sold in single units in a sealed can, which seems MUCH easier to track.

honestly, when people are too stupid to take care of themselves someone else has to step up. if this bill passes and they stop serving some sugary drinks in public places and this in turn reduces obesity then I'm a fan. less fat people = good imo no matter how you slice it.

Who gives a flying fuck about 'other people?'  If people worried about themselves 1/1000th as much as they do about 'what other people are doing' the world would be a much better place.
