"silence" torture?
    #16551414 -

http://dsc.discovery.com/life/worlds-quietest-room-will-drive-you-crazy-in-30-minutes.html

Sometimes, you need a little peace and quiet to stay sane. But it turns out too much quiet can drive you crazy- or at least make you hallucinate. That’s what scientists at Orfield Labs in Minneapolis have found by studying how subjects react in their anechoic chamber, also known as the world’s quietest room. The sound level in the room, which actually has the Guinness World Record, is -9 decibels, compared to the average “quiet” room’s 30, according to MPR News.

The key to the level of silence is the fact that the walls, floor and ceiling absorb all sound, rather than reflecting it, as most surfaces do. Thus the term anechoic: no echo. It’s so quiet, you can hear your own organs: your heart, stomach, even your ears, which make a tiny amount of noise. It turns out that it’s not an especially pleasant experience, especially in the dark. The longest anyone has ever spent alone in the chamber? Forty-five minutes.

Orfield Labs uses the anechoic chamber to test the noise levels of various products like LED lights. But watch out: it could easily become a place to drive people mad.

This is exactly how sensory deprivation tanks and dissociative drugs work. I'm sure a ton of people here would love it.

I would find it impossible to sleep in there. I find it hard to sleep when my room is quiet, which they say is 30 decibels. So a -9.4 decibels would leave me restless.

I always keep my fan on at night to sooth me to sleep :cookiemonster:

What is worse, complete silence, or Sesame Street?

imagine that. would be so fucked up. i know sensory deprivation + k is meant to magical, but personally I hate K without music. silence is deafening. It is bullshit. i dont think i would enjoy it at all. imagine going in there on a lvl 5 trip on some acid or something, probably end up scarred for life

that part about being able to hear your organs might get to me after a bit, even if fascinating for a while

I think being able to hear my own organs would get to me after awhile too. Or maybe it wouldn't and being able to hear the rhythmic beat of my heart would be soothing and allow me to fall into a trance....similar to being soothed by leaving your fan on to soothe you to sleep, as someone else said.

I was thinking the same thing.
It'd be interesting to focus on the sound of you breath rather than the physical sensation.

I've been wanting to stay a few hours in a sensory deprivation tanks for years but the only one around is way too expensive. I reckon I would enjoy tripping in such room. For awhile at least...

I would try sober first but adding psychedelics or dissociatives ought to be crazy.

Apparently you start hallucinating with a few minutes when your inside that room.

I would like to try though.

I have significant hearing loss so I wonder what this room would do to me.

I have ongoing tinnitus so sitting in 'silence' is actually pretty loud.
