Awesome, modular, security system

So, I'm trying to design an awesome, modular security system. Basically, I want everything to run off of one computer that will be in a locked room with a battery backup.

They make systems that will let you hook up a ton of cameras to a single computer - what I'm looking for is a system that lets you hook up alarms too, than then somehow alerts your phone. That way you could add sensors to your doors and windows, and maybe even laser sensors in rooms you know know one will be in.

I also want to get just get some separate stuff, like better doors and some new windows - maybe even a loud alarm that says "Enter access key in 30 seconds or police will be called".

Alone got a sweet alarm system they DIY's? Not really looking to deathtrap anything -- honestly hoping putting 10, visible, hard-to-access security cameras is enough to keep most thieves at bay.

actually my roommate is doing just that for fun.  15$ hi def usb cameras on ebay + USB hubs plus computer.

i'm sure you could find usb motion sensors or laser thingees.

write a little script to text you.

nah we just require more data.  we need a computer that remembers where we left anything, and that will count the bricks on our wall.

a computer needs eyes.
