My ethnobotanical garden! (pictures)

Hello! My first post here... the ethnobotanical garden section is actually why I finally registered here. It's amazing how you guys care for your ethnos! I just wanted to share some pics and hope to share a lot of information in the future. I started with this hobby about 3 years ago and it's kinda like an addiction by now. This year I started to put much more effort in it. I live in Europe, so I really hope I can manage to get some of the tropical one's well through the following winters... I think I live in zone 5 or 6.

This year I have also seeds successfully germinated of:

Heimia salicifolia
Calea zacatechichi
Nicotina tabaccum
Trichocereus bridgesii
Lophophora williamsii
Morning glorys

and I have a Ololuiqui plant growing for the second year now, have to make a picture one day :smile:.

and some more, not psychoactive plants like Stevia (2nd year, sprouted from the roots (?)),

and hope to get some nightshades as well, I guess I planted them a little bit too late. This would be Atropa belladonna, Brugmansia spp, and Hyoscyamus niger

Thanks, I will post some more photos tomorrow when I find the time. Meanwhile also three Passiflora caerulea germinated and some more Banisteriopsis caapi. :smile:

Banisteriopsis caapi


Banisteriopsis caapi, the one I posted before (sprouting a second seedling, what is impossible since I only have 1 seed in this pot :laugh:?) Can anyone tell me how this is possible? I mean I am not complaining haha, it's awesome, but I am confused. Since the plant is only like 2-3 weeks old now.

Rivea corymbosa (seedling, from root - compared to mother plant)


I had some problems this winter with white flyes attacking the Rivea plant, it lost a lot of leafs during this attack. Got rid of them by now and I am sure it will grow a lot this summer again. The problem was, that I spent almost half a year in Asia this winter so someone else cared for the plants and this person didn't really notice the white flyes so they could do their work really well... Anyway, it looks pretty healthy again :smile:.

That happens with plants sometimes, it's genetics: called poly embryonic meaning the seed had two embryos. Some plants always have more than one sprout others it seems to be more of a "mutation" that happens time to time. If you research it you will see a lot of information on Cannabis plants doing that. Some keep them some decide to cut it out to reduce possible problems. I say keep it for the novelty.

I once had an odd seedling growing between other normal looking seedlings. It turned out to be a dandelion that blew through my window into the pot. But the stem of your second seedling looks quite the same as the B. caapi seedling, so it might as well be a poly embryonic seedling as stankyjay mentioned.

Anyway, nice collection! I would love to see the progress of those plants!

Thanks! Yes it is 100% a second B.caapi seedling, because for germination I have a plastic box which I can seal so the humidity level is high all the time. No chance of any other plants seeds coming in. Except maybe some stuff which has already been in the soil when I bought it. But that is definately not the case here :smile:.

Nice garden for sure. Only thing out of place is that your "T. peruvianus" is actually a T.cuzcoensis. Sad but true I'm afraid...

A cuzcoensis? Well, I thought it's kind of strange for a peruvianus to have such long spines, but I remember I have seen some pictures of long(er) spined ones somewhere around here. And I bought it at as peruvianus, but that was in a garden shop (well, specialized on cacti). But you guys probably now better about Trichocereus species. Thanks anyway for the ID! It's not too bad, I love this one - no matter what kind of Trich it might be :smile:.

EDIT: well after checking it again on google (I don't know if its allowed to post pics here) I found dozens of pictures of peruvianus torchs with longer spines. But also the cuzcoensis looks pretty similar. I am a little bit confused. Maybe more opinions here are asked :smile:. Otherwhise I start a new ID thread sometimes...
