I'm Building my First Bike!
    #16395029 -

Hey everyone who's a bicyclist, I'm about to build my first bike.  It's going to be a singlespeed freewheel (with the ability to be a fixed but not focused on being a fixed).  Now before anyone goes and says fixed and singlespeeds are a waste, this is going to be my first bike build, and I can build a higher quality singlespeed for the amount of money I have vs a multigear bike... That said, my DREAM bike is a 21-33speed carbonfibre bike, but I don't have $6,000, only have about $500 to invest.

I bought this frame and it'll be here in a few days:
53cm Track Bike

It's 53cm, I could have probably gotten a 54 and been fine, but I'm 5'8 with short legs, figured this would be a good size frame.  I'm planning on ordering some 700C Velocity or Mavics, but depends on the price.  I'm seeing them range from $100 to $250 for a set of singlespeed flipflop hub.  Any suggestions?

Let me know what you think

My dad loves bikes... But he barely sips alcohol let alone know what the fuck a "shroomeey" is.

It's not going to be fixed, it's going to be a singlespeed with a freewheel.  I can't afford the extra 500$ for a nice derailer set and cogs, and a piece of shit derailer that doesn't work half the time isn't worth investing in, (anything under 100$).

It's not too hard, I mean there's a bit of a learning curve, but if you think about a frame, it's only got two sets of sealed bearings, that's the fork and the bottom bracket, and the bottom bracket isn't sealed I guess.  Might be, I dunno exactly, I'll find out soon heh.  Nothing complicated in comparison to say a combustion engine.

I've actually packed and installed bearings before I could probably handle that part.  I had it in my mind that assembling/adjusting the drive mechanism was tedious if not outright complicated

my mistake

Theres a special place in my heart for fixies... long story...

IMO cheap or used etc. derailers work okay if you dial them in properly and maintain them.

I personally wont ride a speed bike without gears, it seems counter intuitive, but to each their own.

i have built and repaired many a bike in my day, let me know if you need any help.

one thing i wish i had on my travel bike is luggage racks and saddle bags!  they can be so useful for some things such as camping etc.

what kind of bars are you thinking of?

the drive train is mostly a piece of cake, chain meet gears, the derailer works basically like the brakes, only a bit more complicated.

IMO the hardest part is building and truing the wheels.

I have Mavic wheels on my bike and love them. My wife has DT Swiss On hers and they seem ok too.

Unfortunately, we don't have cheap used good bikes in Reno, Nevada.  And Burning Man is to blame for that.  If you buy a used bike here, I guarantee it's been out in the desert playa dust for two weeks, you'll take things apart and dust will come pouring out of it.  I've tried buying a few frames at the Quanis club and they were all trashed from Burners- basically all the used bikeshops here dedicate their bikes to burning man, as they can charge 30$ a bike rental, and rent out 20,000 bikes to a bunch of drugged out yuppies who become desert rats for a week and then abandon the area for a year, leaving piles of trashed, dusty bikes behind.

As far as bars go, I'm not sure yet, maybe a flat or BMX style handlebar system would be good, because I have a hunchy back, but might do the standard roadstyle bars.

I'll probably take my rims to a bike shop to get them trued, as I have zero experience in that heh.

Reno has about Four Hundred Million Bike Shops.  But bikes are still expensive, even used ones.  Its just plain silly, you could go to LA and get these bikes at Fractions of the cost.

Dude just buy yourself an Old Puegot Mixte Frame and convert it to Fixed and rollup your right pant leg like a faggot!

Ah, when you said peugot I was thinking 1970's steel tubing heavy ass bikes where the frames weigh a good 25lb or more... Add on the rest and you've got a heavy ass bike lol.

Mixtas are also women's frames. (At least that's what they look like).

Ive always thought womens bike frames were good for men too due to the anti toptube to the ballsack feature.

most girls i see on bikes dont wear dresses on bikes anymore, but the frames are still made for dresses.

I noticed a fad of hipsters up in Portland, hipstergirls in their hipsterdresses trying to ride fixed gears.

So the female bikeframe is gaining popularity again amongst females.

DUDE, Trust me....

Just go to the Satellite, Bar, near downtown Reno and just watch how many dudes ride there on their Mixte's....

Even saw a dude wearing Capri Pants because he didn't want to look like Dexie's Midnight Runners with the Cut-off Pants!!

The Satellite is Reno's OG Hipsters BAR.

As a matter of Fact I told one of the Bar Keeps they should rename the place "HIPSTER BAR"; she said she almost peed her pants when I said that.  SInce she wasn't one.

You want to know why they ride women's frame bikes?  The only thing that the cheap bike shops have in stock (the two places that pile used bikes, Reno Bike Project and Quanis club), they have TONS of women's road bikes for 10-20$ a frame.  However a sharp contrast is their lack of Men's frames.  They've got about 100 women's frame roadbikes sitting around, but no men's frames.  There's a reason there are a lot of guys riding women's frames in Reno.
