So I have been thinking about this lately because I have come across multiple media reports that have suggested that smoking hookah is becoming an epidemic and it is far more dangerous than smoking cigarettes.

I love smoking some good shisha. I do it every once in awhile at a hookah bar, maybe once every month or two. I have been considering purchasing a hookah lately. I probably will because smoking weed out of one is like being in heaven. Especially after or before smoking some good tobacco. So how bad is it really? It seems to me like the water should filter out impurities but I don't really know what contents of the smoke are soluble in water. How bad is it to have one hookah session per week? It seems like the media is really exaggerating this.

Also anyone can recommend a nice hookah for me to purchase. Anything under $150.

Nargila (hookah) is an integral part of social life in many Mid-East countries and has been used for centuries. Used in moderation, the effect is likely minimal. I've only seen a few studies indicating their dangers, and it seemed more epidemiological than anything. I've smoked them for years and have owned several. You can browse online for good package deals that will come with everything you need to get started.

The main danger behind cigarettes, in my opinion, is their inherent habitual/convenience factors. You're probably not going to load up a hookah when you're stuck in traffic and pissed off nor pack your hookah 12 or more times a day.

That being said, from a health perspective, anytime you light any plant matter (salvia/tobacco/weed/whatever) you're creating cancerous compounds. :shrug:

Last I checked nicotine free is the norm. Its just plant matter and molass's I think, far, far less chemicals then a cigg and the media sound like there exaggerating the fuck out of its tar content. I'd like to know how they came up with their figures.

Nicotine free is definitely not the norm. Tobacco-less is available, but if you just go to the corner store and buy some shisha it will have tobacco.

I don't think nicotine is really all that bad. It gets really bad rep because it can cause heart problems and of course it is very addictive. But I think sustained moderate tobacco use is really bad because of the other things, mostly tars and other carcinogens. Anyway, I know that I definitely get a decent amount of nicotine because I get a good buzz from smoking hookah. But I wonder about the typical additives and tars that cigarette smokers breath in, and how prevalent they are in hookah tobacco.

I mean obviously anyone that smokes isn't very serious about how they treat their lungs. But I think there is a realistic middle ground that can be achieved so that one can enjoy a good smoke every once in awhile without seriously fucking up their lungs. And I don't really think that smoking weed is very bad for your lungs. It is nowhere as bad as smoking tobacco of course.

Don't smoke weed in your hookah.

150 will get you a cheap, shitty hookah.

i don't smoke anymore, but i still have a small, genuine, hand made, persian hookah.

I have heard not to smoke weed in my hookah before. But why? I have smoked weed from a hookah before and it is my favorite weed smoking experience.

And I don't know, I have been browsing a lot of hookah forums and a lot of people have recommended hookahs for less than $120 that they say are very good. And they are hand-crafted too.

I don't think there is a lot of nicotine in shisha. Last year my roommates would generally pack 4+ hookah bowls a day. I ended up smoking a lot of those with them and never got addicted to nicotine. It does take a toll on your lungs though. I knew i needed to slow down after I got really winded after playing a game of knock-out.

There definitely is a middle ground. Moderation is key. I only smoke hookah a few times a month now and my lungs feel much healthier. Smoking anything is unhealthy though. I'm giving my hookah away this weekend because I don't want to fuck up my lungs any more than I already have.

Weed resin gets in fucking everything, that's the reason I've always heard. If you want a hookah to smoke pot out of, get one of those really cheap and small acrylic hookahs. I have one of those that I'll let people smoke weed in, and then my nicer glass one is just for shisha. Even a small glass one is still pretty cheap. Something like this or this.

I actually haven't used my hookahs in fucking ages, I think I'm gonna go buy some shisha when I get off work and fire one up.

Hookahs use coals to burn the tobacco. The vaporization point of nicotine is much higher than that of THC. If you smoke weed through a hookah you will get very nice, smooth hits. This means that you can get more THC into your lungs at once. It gets you higher faster, but it also burns a lot of your weed. It's a very inefficient way to smoke weed, even though it seems like you're getting the most out of it.

Also, shisha has way more nicotine than cigarettes. It doesn't become a daily ritual as quickly as cigarettes do, but eventually you'll find yourself loading up your hookah when you get home from work or whatever. You can't smoke hookah all day long like you can with cigarettes.

Most of the studies examining hookah smoke have found that it contains more nicotine, and equal (or often greater) amounts of carcinogens and toxins as compared to cigarettes.

dont forget the aluminum foil that most people use. I cant use the foil it's gross. there has to be a ceramic screen you can get to put the coal on or something.

When you use foil are you actually inhaling aluminum?  I assume the self lighting hookah coals are no good?  The ones that aren't the quick light ones are such a fuckin pain to light.  My hookah is currently out of commission. 

It has some sort of film on the bottom of the glass part.  I suppose I could bleach it or something to kill it but then smoking out of it might be dangerous.  Is my hookah saveable?
