Beetles munching on my dragonfruit
    #16313917 -

I found cucumber beetles munching on the new growth on my dragonfruit cactus.
You can see the hole where they were feeding.
I've handled the beetles but it looks like some kind of red bacteria is spreading from the wound.
You can see in the pic where the beetle fed on the lower part of the stem and the bacteria has moved to the tip.
What should I do?
Should I cut these stems to stop the spread?
thanks

Hi there... In order for this reply to be of any value, you will have to be sure that you are dealing with one or both types of the Cucumber Beetle.

A couple of things come to mind about your problem. Cucumber beetles are "sucking" pests. They use their mouth parts to break the skin of their host, and then suck out the nutrients from the plants aqueous juices.

From your photos it looks as though the beetle may have made many small "test sites" along his route until he came to a place on the plant he was satisfied with. So this could explain the rusty spotted discolorations almost in a straight line up the middle of the new growth. Plant cells that come into contact with oxygen often turn rusty because of oxidization.

Cucumber beetles also can carry and spread the bacterial wilt organism, Erwinia tracheiphila and the Cucumber Mosaic Virus. You will have to read up on those potential problems to see if these have infected your plants.

As I know, manual removal is probably the best weapon against these pests for you, because you will eventually be wanting to consume the fruits. I know a little about this plant because I have a house in Thailand, and Dragon Fruit is very, very popular there.

I hope this helps you... Happy gardening!

I have the spotted cucumber beetle.
It just showed up a week ago. First they were on my veggies so I neemed everything.
I didn't neem my dragonfruit and I think thats why they migrated.
Iv've read a little bit but I really don't know how to identify on cactus.
I put neem oil on all my cacti now and removed all beetles. It was only like 10 total throughoutt my garden.
soil drenched veggies with neem as well.
Can I soil drench with neem on my dragonfruit?

fuck

It has progressed to all stems now. The stems aren't rotting or getting soft.
Can anybody tell me what it is and how should I deal with it?
I am letting this one dry out but these cacti like to stay wet.

Hi savage...

I sent the photos you have posted in this thread to some of my farmer friends in Chonburi, Thailand. They grow this plant commercially and I expect they will know exactly what is happening with your Dragon Fruit garden.

Give me a day or two to get their replies, and I will post their recommendations here as soon as I get them. In the mean time, don't stress! It looks as though whatever it is, it is not very critical yet.

BTW, did you see that you have a little Hobo Spider standing guard there on your Dragon Fruit plant? He might be a very nice friend to help you with your problem!  :sunny:

OK... I just got an email from my farmer friends in Thailand. They said that for sure you have a type of fungus on these plants (or plant). They suggest for you to go to the garden store and buy an anti-fungal preparation. They also said that you should do the treatment soon because that it will kill the plant altogether if left untreated.

These people grow Dragon Fruit on their farm as part of their livelihood, so I really trust what they say. Also as a really nice inspiration for you, they sent this photo which was taken last week on their farm. Of course it is a Dragon Fruit in flower...

I hope this helps you to save your plant!

I have a couple extra dragon fruit plants I can hook you up with next time you are in my neck of the woods.  Not sure of the strain, I started them from cuttings and they are about 18 inches tall.

certainly fungal.  I would also move your plants to a slightly shadier possition as they look rahter yellow.  they grow in full sun well, but do better starting out in less light.

your growth tips are going red too, thats a bad sign they are getting stressed and rotting.  soft new growth rot easy on hylo, which also makes me think it may be light.  The stems will heal, but they will be easy to get infected again, if the plant is big enough, hack the ones that go red.  spores are everywhere, but generally dragoon fruit plants do better without a lot of rotting organic stuff laying around.

Thanks everybody.

I'm not sure what to use for antifungal since I don't use copper fungicides.
Is there anything else that can be used?I covered heavy in neem and gave it a soil drench.

Does anybody think that letting the cactus dry out for awhile would benefit?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust_(fungus)

While my Thai friends did not elaborate on what type of fungus you have there, but from everything I can find, it appears that you have some type of Rust Fungus. The link above goes into detail about how to treat it, and yes, water management is very important to it's eradication.

I also did some research on Neem Oil, and lucky for you, it is also used as an effective organic means for controlling Rust Fungi. Best go to the Wiki site above and educate yourself on this Rust. It looks like there is a potential for it to spread into your other plants if not properly treated.

Good luck!  :sunny:

P.S. How do you like the photo of the flowers? Pretty aren't they?

Thanks you are very kind. Always outplaying me with your generosity. Maybe I will trade you a mimosa baby next time I pass through.

Those photos are very nice nativenenglish. Can't wait for mine to get there.

good news is one (sweet red) of them is healing up nicely. The tip is no longer red and the injury has started to callous.
Hoping the worst one will too which is my biggest. Luckily I took quite a few cuttings off that one.
