Casing been sitting for six days with no action...
    #1621741 - 06/09/03 08:32 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

So I cased 4 pf style cakes with an inch layer of verm on the bottom, about 1 1/2 -2 inches of substrate, and 1-1/2 inches of coir/verm mix on top.

It's been six days and no mycel on top, how much longer before I operate?  I'm thinking like 3-4 days before I break it open, and see what went wrong.

Ok, did you just do this all at once?

An inch of verm on the bottom is too much, IMHO.

Did you let the cakes colonize the substrate first?

You have too thick a casing as well.

After full colonization of substrate, for the depth you are using, you shouldn't use more the 1/2-3/4" of casing. Then incubate for another week or so until the casing is almost, but not totally, colonized. Just mycellium peeking out in the valleys of the casing layer.

BTW, six days isn't enough time to colonize the substrate (well, maybe, but have patience) and then you have this massive casing layer. I would say 1-2 weeks for substrate colonization, then another week or so for the casing layer. Thats 21 days.

Maybe nothing went wrong, 6 days isn't too long.

1 1/2" of casing is too thick use about for a 1 1/2" use like 1/2 " of your coir verm mix 1" of bottom layer is fine if not soaked use a 1/4 of your substate depth as casing it will be atleast 2 weeks probably more before you see a pin in that casing or at all

I agree the top casing layer is much too thick for your substrate depth. If you can safely remove some of it without damaging the myc. i'd give that a try.

I agree with fallenshroom. 1 inch of verm. on the bottom is fine but your top layer should only be about a quarter of the depth of your substrate. I would say that the reason you don't see any mycelium on top is that your top layer is to thick.

yes..the reason you arent seeing shitn is because your casing layer is like 3X too thick....try scraping some of it off with a sterile spoon or something

you only need enough casing layer to cover the colonized substrate, about 1/4 inch

Alright, I was just following the procedures for casing for dummies :/...

but duh, of course my substrate was colonized... I'm sorry but I am not stupid... though I understand that some people might be and ask questions like that...

ne ways... I have a cake and a messed up casing fruiting right now, now I just need to doctor this casing, thanks
