any funk or jazz fans in here? * 1
    #16113576 -

I grew up as a Dead Head, listened to metal in my rebellious ages, and now I pretty much just listen to Jazz and Funk...  some classical in there too...

comment on these videos please.

Lee Ritenour 'Rio Funk'

Arturo Sandoval

Mingus Big Band

_____________________________________________

now two classical pieces you will all recognize.

Mozart's Symphonie #40 in G minor.  (conducted by no other than Leonard Bernstein)

Finally, the Barber of Seville Overture by Gioachino Rossini. (think Bugs Bunny)

I lied, one more Rossini piece you will know:

And the Grand Finale goes to Tchaikovsky.  1812 Overture.

I apologize for making this thread so long, but it was better than making multiple threads.

Enjoy!

This is insane. I am very fortunate to have a local jazz radio station that has no commercials.

I was a classically trained trumpet player, I am not a fan of miles davis.  I like Maynard Ferguson more than miles...  I like Dizzy more, and Arturo better.

Arturo Sandoval is a BEAST:

But seriously Jim, you don't like Miles Davis?  I don't even understand.

Relaxin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is one of the best albums of all time, of any genre.

It is a long story for my dislike of Miles.

I do not hate his music, but his style more so lack of proficiency...

Lack of proficiency?  Really?  Proficiency at what?  Obviously as a leader and musician he was impeccable and one of the greatest of all time.  Listen to any of the legends who came up with Miles and they'll tell you how much they learned from him and the level that he was on.

Proficiency at the trumpet equivalent of "shredding" or playing ear piercing high notes?  Yeah that wasn't his style and if that's all that impresses you I guess I can see why you're not into him.  But I'm really confused by you questioning his proficiency as a musician.

Anyway, one of my favorite grooves to play on drums.  Such a classic track.

There are more people imprisoned for the commission of drug offenses in the United States - close to 500,000 - than are incarcerated in England, France, Germany, and Japan for all crimes combined.  Examined in another way, the United States has 100,000 more people incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses than all the countries of the European Union combined, despite the fact that the European Union has 100 million more citizens. :crankey:

I could write forever on this subject.  Respect my opinion, cause that is all it is.

My trumpet teacher, played on both Miles's and Dizzy's albums.  He was a good friend of Parker as well.  I was spoiled, but that is what happens when you grow up in a musical family.

I have studied with a lot of greats.  Ed Shaunessy, Wynton, Nick Payton, Frank Mantooth, Buddy Baker, etc...  Obviously all on different instruments.

I just do not like where Mile's went with his career.

why is it acceptable to be a jazz musician on heroin, but a jazz musician on cocaine is taboo?

Maynard Ferguson was a phenomenal musician.  yet, he was an outcast cause his drug of choice was cocaine...
