I was going to recommend Parliament but he said recent. I don't know if that counts but they did release one recent album but its nothing like it used to be. I saw some cool bands on a JazzFest tape but can't really recall what they were called sorry? Let me know what you find though guys cause Im definately interested.

Check out the dancing in the street from that. I played it at a party I was having a few weeks ago, everyone was dancing straight for like 15 minutes. Its an absurdly funky song.

as for bands that are currently touring, sound tribe sector 9 play some funky shit now and again. fela kuti's son (can't remember his name) carries on amazing afrobeat traditions. galactic are wonderful, esp in the afternoon, and mmw (esp when john scofield plays with them) play an amazing show.

as for iconic funk groups, of course funkadelic. maceo parker is also def worth more than just a listen.
