Is EXIF data embedded only by cell phones cameras, or do all digital cameras embed traceable data within them???

Digital cameras do too.

Its quite easy to remove tho. Simply google "remove exif data".

Part of me finds the story kind of funny: this "hacker" does something silly (ddos or something ooooooooo) and then brags about it/tries to rub it in his target's face with a picture. Then the feds use the very picture he posted to mock his targets to bust him! Real skilled "hacker" there- doesn't even know about EXIF data. :herpderp:

By the way: this site removes your EXIF data automatically when you post a pic.

If you don't put them through an image editor or decode them, then yes, they are. They can trace exactly what camera (serial number and all) the photo was taken with. If you take the picture on a phone and post it here, they can trace much more information through that.

Images uploaded to the Shroomery are automatically stripped of EXIF information so there is no identifying metadata embedded in the files. This is also true on http://imgur.com, but I don't know about other image hosting sites. The relevance is that if you take pictures with a camera-phone or GPS-enabled digital camera, you should know what additional information is included in the files so you don't inadvertently leak information about your location or hardware. With Windows 7, you can just right-click the image, select 'Properties', and click on the 'Details' tab to inspect the EXIF data.
