27 years in the business. I am trying to get my nursing license now. I have done everything in a restaurant you can think of from dish washing to management. The next thing would be to own one, but I am too burned out. I may open a small neighborhood bar one day. Plan on nursing for a few years to travel and help people, and make some money. I prefer bar tending over waiting. I am the guy you want working for you in a place. Good work ethic and can multi-task like a MF.

i dont bitch about doing my job and i break my fucking back for my customers, co-workers and managers. i have never gave a guest anything less than a smile and complete courtesy. my managers get compliments on my service every shift.

i get tired of

retarded hostesses

people bitching (not asking, bitching) for the fucking bread when they can see it on the tray i just got their drinks off of, sorry i dont have 5 hands, you might have to wait 2 seconds while i set your drinks down and turn around to get your bread, be patient

people who arnt ready to order but insist on making me stand there while they ponder the menu for 10 minutes while im getting double sat

helping my coworkers any chance i get only to have them bullshitting playing grab ass while one of my tables goes ungreeted as i am getting ran retarded by their table

people not tipping on gift cards (ex. a table with a $100 ticket uses $50 gift card, acts blown away by your service and then only tips 15-20% on 50)

people taking it out on me when the kitchen fucks up or takes a little long, yet i do everything possible to make it up to them

people letting their children act like fucking animals

verbal tips

"good evening my name is""ice t"

cheapos fishing for discounts and comps

people literally getting upset with ME about prices or selection

a guest acting completely blown away by my service handing me a measly 5% tip while acting like they are hooking you up(3% automatically goes to tip out and considering the time you spent at my table, you basically cost me money)

Canadians

etc. etc.

2/3 of my tables - cool as shit
1/3 of my tables - make me wanna walk straight out the back door

i made alot more money at my previous restaurant but it wasnt as close to my school so now im working in a lower income area and there is alot of trash that comes in. im basically working twice as hard for half the money and its a hard thing to get out of my head and i feel burned out.

its saturday night and i have been working my ass off all weekend (10 hours STRAIGHT today), i just got to make it through the post-church assholes tomorrow morning and then i will get the day off. i made decent money this weekend but damn it was a bit rough...

I had to cover someone's shift once as a waitress, though I was kitchen staff. ended up losing that job because I was being a bit too much of an asshole to the assholes.

I average 20-25% no matter what where I am. The problem is I average about 250-500 a night in sales. I do only have under 1000 in monthly bills/overhead for now though. And I really have a lot of time off considering, AND I live one block from my job so I NEVER drive to work. I am going to enjoy this while I can!

It's an ok job at times, but I'm really introverted and get social anxiety so it was always stressful for me working in a restaurant that had almost 300 seats.

oh gods. the time I worked in a kitchen, I'd constantly hear that.  The wait staff bitching because they got a weak tip, saying if you can't afford to tip, you shouldn't go out to a restaurant. The thing is, this is Canada. The wait staff gets paid min wage, whereas the states, I guess it's legal for the restaurants to pay below min wage and expect you to make up the difference with tips.

The wait staf's take home pay for the end of the night was always double what I made. So I'd just roll my eyes to their complaints.

As an added bonus, they'd be complaining about not being able to pay their bills, yet in the next breath, talk about the $300 hair extensions they just got.

In my state pretty much all servers are paid $2.13/hr, which is less than a third of the fed minimum wage of $7.25.  Some nights you can do really well and come out to 11 or 12 dollars an hour, but during the week days it can easily be lower than minimum wage.  A lot of people haven't ever worked a serving job and just assume servers make minimum wage, so even though the service was great they won't feel bad for leaving a shitty tip.

In my case, most of my serving experience was at a hibachi restaurant and the chefs went home with 50% of the tip even though they were paid salary.  6% of the total tip went to the sushi chef for sushi items, which is fair, but bussers and kitchen staff that make minimum wage and don't interact with customers also getting a cut is kind of ridiculous.  So even if I averaged over 20% on $1200 in sales I'm still not doing as awesome as it sounds.

kitchen staff in my restaurant got 2% of tips, all pooled together than divided by however many worked that shift and then given to you every two weeks. Only ones that didnt share tips with the kitchen staff was the bar tenders.

Waiting tables sucks and everyone should have to do it at least once in their life time. The pay rate in America is bullshit - It averages about 19 grand a year with it's less than minimum wage pay rate of 2.13/hour. And I'd you get foreign tourists, forget about a tip unless they're knowledgeable of American customs - it's uncouth to tip servers in some foreign Countries because they're paid a decent wage. Anyway, I could go on and on about how restaurants rip off their servers in order to afford more important things, like more alcohol, but the bottom line is that serving is a good way to learn how to interact in a monetary context and how to promote yourself.

I work in a small resort village for rich people like Johnny Depp and other famous people. I work in the kitchen and make decent money. In the summer, the waitstaff leave with pocket fulls of cash every night. One time, Tim Allen left a waitress a $700 tip for a beer and a steak:eek:

sure seems like you're bitching about your job. I was working as a short
order cook, completely untrained by the company and as it turns out the
waitresses were never trained, it was their first day, a friday night
and although I've waited tables and trained many waitresses and even a few
cooks I was unprepared for what I got myself into. about an hour into the
shift a bus pulled into the parking lot, that's panic time in a waffle
house for most folks, the bus was loaded with church black folks going to
florida, according to most church groups dont tip and blacks dont tip

one waitress takes all the orders of the group on the bus, about 9 tickets,
total of about 35 orders, she drops them on the cutting board and walks
away leaving me clueless about the order while more people started to
trickle in from the mall across the street... did I bitch? fuck no, I went
and asked all those people to be patient, double checked their orders to
the tickets, made corrections and then cooked their food and delivered it
with the help of the other waitress who was also handling her own section

I didnt get a single complaint on the quality of the food, not one person
bitched about the service, if they said jump I was hoppin' to it and I got
mad tips and numerous complements on how the food was, I split the tips
with the other waitress because she didnt freak too badly

you're complaining about being double seated, I've had the entire
restaurant fill up in just a few minutes, just me and the cook on the
opening day of hunting season while the national guard was on maneuvers,
the place was a sea of camouflage, I felt like I was in the forest. I got
them something in front of them, made a few jokes while setting them up and
getting what ever order I could, drinks, food or anything and I worked it
like a $2 whore

I've elbowed cooks off the grill to make sure a customer's food is right

focus on the children, they want the attention, ignore the parents, your
tips come from keeping those kids happy

Quote:
verbal tips

the best tips I ever received were a few cigarettes, some gum, and a couple of dead kennedy buttons from some punk teens, hell, that one pissed off the waitress I was working with which was like getting a bonus, another of the best tips was a verbal tip from a mixed race couple because I served them and treated them like they were human, that poor girl cried because she didnt feel she had enough to tip me what she felt the service was worth

even Preacher and grumpy ass Bob who consistently only tipped 25 cents
regardless of what they ordered got impeccable service when I was working,
I understand their situation, on SSI and lonely so they came down for the
company more than the food, bob's sister would come in and apologize to me
for his behavior but I liked the old codger, I used him to sharpen my
tounge and after our exchange of insults that old man would hug me, pay his
bill, leave his quarter and go home... my tips from others increased
because they saw I gave a shit about him and didnt care about the money

Quote:

and you still maintain you arent bitching about your job?

like I said it's all about your attitude, I was always the top earner in
every restaurant and bar I've worked in because I've always maintained that
no matter what, the customer always comes first, I dont play favorites
based on whether they're church groups, minorities, teens or anything else,
they're my customer base and they're the ones I need to please, I've handed
more than one manager his ass and cut locks off the commissary for failing
to keep me properly supplied so I can keep my customers happy and with you
going in with the attitude that these church people are non-tipping
assholes tell me you wont make shit from them

every day is not just another day but it's the greatest day of my life,
there are no shitty days, no matter how shitty everyone claims the job is,
it's the best damned job in the world and that attitude earns me money as a
server, you can put on the image that you're there to serve your customers
and that you enjoy what you're doing but your real attitude shines through

the #1 secret to success and making bank "fuck it", when you learn to
master that then they'll all be $200+ days

at waffle house I averaged about $40k/yr in tips alone, I earned between
$3.25 and $7/hr on my check depending on the location I worked, to fill in
for someone at a manager's request I demanded a $50 bonus, same with
working at another location, I never tipped out anyone that wasnt directly
assisting me, cooks make an hourly wage, managers earn a salary, since I
wont get a cut of their checks if business is slow they can fuck right off
about taking my tips, I dont need their job but they need my services

when the dish washer figures out that he's running the show he'll make more
money, when the waitron units figure out they run the show, they'll earn
more and pay less and unless I'm paid better than the federal minimum wage
and earning tips, no one gets a tip out unless I feel they deserve it

Jessica Swift said:

I base my tips on several things, what I see and hear while serving other
customers, their attentiveness and anticipation of needs and attitudes are
the biggest factors, I dont want to hear bitching about another customer or
how little someone is making, I want to notch service and I pay to get it,
my rip range starts at 30% and can go up or down depending on what I see, a
person has to be a real fuckwit to get under 15% from me and if they manage
that it's typically a 12 cent tip
