LED is just a better version of LCD I believe.

Instead of a couple of florescent tubes they have a few hundred individual super bright LEDs.



Go for the LED.


I got a 47 LED 240hz.  Looks so damn sharp it kinda bothered my eyes at first.  ALmost looks 3-D (it isn't)

What are the disadvantages of plasma then?  There must be some, because it is significantly cheaper than the other techs.

They're heavier and they can't be laid down flat when moving.  They are better in every single performance category over LCD/LED.

For OP:  If you are only considering LCD/LED they are identical except for the type of backlight that illuminates the panel.  The LED is better in most every way over LCD.  I would recommend Samsung or LG in either case, but I would NEVER recommend either over plasma.  240Hz is a waste of money, since anything beyond 120Hz is only marketing toward the people that think bigger numbers are always better.  If you want to pay significantly more for a lesser-performing TV then that's your prerogative.  Go Panasonic plasma, there's nothing better on the market.

Hmm.  That's crazy - you can get 1080p 60" plasmas for like $1100...

People have a tendency to associate performance with price and that is generally true HOWEVER the process of making a plasma TV is significantly less expensive than making an LCD panel.  Adding LED lighting vs. CC costs even more.

I had a 42" samsung plasma before I got the samsung LED.  The LED is sharper,  more depth,  clearer image.  the plasma had better color I think. 
Could just be my settings.

I like the LED better.

I can notice a difference between 60hz and 120.  between 120hz and 240 not so much.  120 is probably plenty.

plasma was like 600hz.  I don't notice any difference in fast action on the plasma vs the LED.

LCD florescent just don't look as bright.  kind of dull.  I'd take a plasma over standard LCD any day.  I'd have to see LED and plasma side by side on the same signal at the store to decide between the two.

LCD and LED are somewhat "newer" technology and this also effects the price.

There used to be differences among the technologies, but flat panel tech is so mature, that they've pretty much evened out.

Nowadays, beyond minor differences, it comes down to personal preference.  I like movies and theatre, so I tend to prefer the picture produced by plasma.  It looks a bit "softer", and is more realistic.  Plasmas are heavier and tend to use more power.

I tend to find that LED and LCD produce an unnatural picture.  Were I a gamer, I might prefer things other than plasma.

i dunno man, my plasma looks great with my 360. everyone i know has flat screens and none match up to the quality of mine. i know mine isnt top dog by any means, but its better quality thus far.

originl 42" plasma I got 10-12 years ago was something like $2100 really cheap off the internet,  two russian guys dropped it off in a rental truck from NJ.  I think it retailed for around $3500 at the time.

Now I'd wait for a sale and get a 55 or 60" plasma for a few hundred bucks.

If you got the money spend a grand on LED.  I'm convinced it's better

Get a good HD signal. satellite.  I'm watching non-HD right now on the old plasma and it sucks.

I agree.  My 50" plasma is 6-7 years old, not even 1080p, and still looks awesome.

I just find that when I'm shopping throughout a store, my perception of picture quality is less dependent on the technology, and has more to do with the specific set.  While I (generally) prefer plasma, there isn't a huge difference.

I find that the thing bezels make a difference though.  The first time I saw Samsungs ultra thin bezel, I was like "WTF!"
