Can you label yourself as an Atheist if you celebrate christmas?

My friend seems to think that celebrating christmas means you're not an Atheist.

He say's seeing as Atheism is a lack of belief in any deity's, celebrating christmas means celebrating Jesus' birth which means you're celebrating a christian holiday which means you're not an Atheist.

I say it does not mean i believe in a deity, but he says you're celebrating god's son which means you're believing in God. But i do not believe celebrating Jesus' birth means you believe in him.

Please, please give your opinions.

I blame culture. Christmas is a corporate scam...

I think that in today's world, most people celebrate xmas, and really the holidays in general, for an excuse to party with good friends and family.

The beauty of being an atheist is that you can choose what to celebrate and what not to celebrate. You are not bound by a religion.

Christmas is such a huge tradition. There's plenty of atheists including myself who enjoys fellowship, booze, and good food with family and friends during the christmas season. No mention of Jesus at our "x-mas" shindigs.

I celebrate it as a nice gathering of family.

Also, Jesus was not born on December 25th.

Or you could just be a badass and celebrate Mithra's birthday, which is on the 25th.

Celebrating Christmas is not really the same as celebrating the birth of Jesus, for a lot of people the holiday has very little to do with religion. On top of that, it's quite possible that even someone who believes that Jesus was a real person worthy of celebrating (as a great philosopher or whatever) might not actually believe in God. Purists can be kind of annoying sometimes.

I'm an atheist and I "celebrate " x-mas. I exchange gifts and eat hella good food. The words christ, jesus, god, or bible never come out of my mouth.

Is your friend arguing this because he considers himself an atheist? Seems to me like that position presupposes that Jesus is in fact God.
