ASUS EAH6950 1GB Direct CU II over-heating...
    #15840081 -

So my wife and I came home from the hospital(baby girl started chain vomiting :frown: ), and my mining rig with 2x 6950's was still trucking away but when I checked GUIMiner my Asus card had shit for MHash/sec.  I opened AfterBurner and surely enough my card was at 103°C. :suicide:

I tried playing around with some of the flags but nothing helped.  The XFX card below it runs at a decent 65°C, and with ASUS touting their shit-piece Direct Cu crap, I was glad I got the card for $200 new on eBay instead of the $275 it retails at... 20% cooler my ass.  The alloy shroud on it is incredibly heavy and almost causes the PCB to bend had I not installed the GPU bracket on my tower.

Anyways, you guys think I should even bother trying to reapply the TIM, or just RMA it?  I've been having a problem with the PC locking up putting it to sleep, no DVI signal on resume, and the Asus card is hooked up to my monitor.  Not positive if taking off the heatsink will void my warranty either, because I know it won't on XFX cards(which is awesome).

Thanks for any advice... and if any of you are on the fence about buying any Direct Cu card, my advice would be to pass on it.  This is my second Direct Cu card and there is literally no difference, except a bloated price tag.

So there are three types of gpu right? embedded, onboard, and expansion correct? What you have is embedded? That has got to be hard core, if your gpu fails, your processor fails as well huh? No blue screen if the pc can't turn on, am I on the right track or the wrong track?
Wait no I didn't read that carefully, you said it's a card, it's expansion then. What do you mean by take it off the heat sink? No dvi signal you just got a cinema display and are daisy chaining several monitors? I saw this on another post. I'm not sure if that's true, just guessing. No dvi signal when your pc goes to sleep? Are you against clocking it back down? What do you mean by take it off the heat sink?

No.

imachavel, did you actually go through the lengths to copy-paste the card type mentioned in the thread title in Google and see what kind of thing it is? Google > guesswork.

@5HT: If that card is within warranty, then simply RMA it. If it comes back and exhibits the same problem, you can always go meddle with it yourself.

Check the warranty, I know we don't warranty ebay purchases, but we allow changing the heatsinks and aftermarket ones as long as you don't damage it.
Don't know what Asus' policy is but I hear their tech support sucks from customers :smirk:
Either RMA it or reseat heatsink/clean/reapply fresh thermal compound.

If it is overheating that badly, I doubt that reseat heatsink/clean/reapply fresh TIM will help much...

Sometimes the heatsinks come loose  Or the thermal compound develops fissures or whatever

Asus OK'ed the RMA.  I didn't want to fuck with it since it was only a month old.  The heatsink is so heavy, and since there is no back-plate, it makes the card very flimsy due to the anchor points only being structurally sturdy on the display port/metal piece going out of the back of the tower.  I worried there would be problems with the TIM while installing the VGA bracket and seeing how much the PCB kind of bent up/down with just very little bits of force on it.

Turns out my daughter had viral gastroenteritis that my wife and I both contracted 12 hours later, so I've had the most awful fucking bug ever in the last two decades of my life.  FUCK this bug.  :crankey:

The TIM could very well be that destroyed if you could see how much this shit-pile moves.  What a terrible design.  Going to call ASUS today and see if reapplying will void my warranty... if not then it's worth the shot since they accepted my RMA.  Haven't noticed any stickers but it could be neatly tucked away such that removing the shroud would cause it to be torn thus voiding a warranty.

Shit, that RMA took 35 minutes to do over the phone, since they never replied to me doing it on their site 3 days ago.  I read their warranty BS and it stated any modification or removal of anything voids the warranty, they get to deal with it.  Ugh, better not get the same crap-wagon back from them doing zero to fix the problem or try to recreate situations at 100% load.  Mods can lock this thread.  Danke!
