anybody know bout growing peyote?? * 1

i can get var. frucii,diffussa,khoelasomething, but not williamsii-are the others worth gowing-i live in nc-kind of cold winter-how to overwinter?-bit of experience with cactus-knowledgeable please chime in

Do you have a garage? If so, what is the internal temperature when it's at its lowest in the Winter? Lophs, like most cacti, go dormant at roughly 50F (10C). You don't really want it to get below 35F (C<2) though.

In dormancy, they do not need hardly any water or light at all.

Define worth growing. If you mean that the others are mescaline bearers, then no. Only L. williamsii contains mescaline in appreciable amounts. Btw, that's koehresii you're thinking of ...

Perhaps Trichocereus spp. may be more up your alley. :shrug:

You can get L. Williamsii seeds easily and grow them yourself. You can grow them using a fluro grow light which are cheap and don't use much electricity. Bring your seedlings etc inside during Winter.

If you want to use them for consumption then buy yourself some san pedro, bridgesii or peruvian torch cactus. They grow really quickly and when they're bigger they're pretty hard to kill.

sorry guys got tied up doing something-im having a hard time finding williamsii seeds-thanks for telling me bout the low alkaloid containing others-i really appreciate yalls help -from what i gather you treat peyote like growing any other cactus-watch the water and dont let it freeze-would like to chat a bit more on the subject-hit me up

I think growing Trichs is more efficient anyway. They grow faster, produce pups which also grow faster than peyote pups, and are legal haha. I guess the only thing with Trichs is space. But overall, when you grow Trichs, you get more trips per year with it than with peyote. (but, again, peyote's much less space consuming. But you also said you can't get willis, and that's a big part of the equation :mrt:)

You can also buy lengths of san pedro and bridgesii and peruvian torch cactus online.

if you can get a seed, hopefully more than one, going then get some pereskiopsis spathulata and graft. someone in **niaps** was getting 7 inch buttons after 2 years instead of the 15 to 30 year period it takes them in the wild

About This Item:
Scientific Name: Pereskiopsis spathulata

Many people have been looking for this species and found it rather hard to obtain. We are very happy to offer this species to our customers.

Although it may not look like one, this is a true cactus. It has leaves and grows much faster than 'normal' globular or columnar cacti.

It's main use is as a rootstock for seedling grafts. A few days old seedlings can be grafted to the tender tips of this cactus. Growth is phenomenal and seedlings can be brought to flowering size within 6 months to a year!

This cactus needs a rich soil and plenty of water. In the winter temperatures should not be below 10°C.

Pereskiopsis can be easily multiplied by cuttings. Clipped off shoots are simply inserted into moist compost without the need for drying. If they are kept out of the full sun they will form roots in 10-14 days.

I'm having a hard time picturing even a very thick pereskiopsis supporting the weight of a 7 inch diameter button, not to say it's impossible but are you sure you got that measurement right?
