My petco Hydrometer
    #1577532 - 05/26/03 02:19 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

I use an aquarium with perlite and the humidity lelve on the thing never goes above 80... I have heard these aren't reliable, am I doing the perlite wrong (about half the inch of perlite is in water) or is the hydrometer screwey.

In The Hawk's guide on setting up your hydrometer right he sugjests going to a cigar shop for one... I can't find a cigar shop that has one in my area...

Thanks

Sko :smirk:

Did you try to calibrate it to see how accurate it is?

the petco things are crap on the half shell...pick up a new one either from a tobacco shop or online....then crack that sucker open and see how they work....
I prefer the heat method....see if they drop below zero under the heat of a torch

you should add another inch of perlite but keep the half inch of water....as for the hydrometer...I don't use one....but I have never had a prob with humidity being too low while using 1/2 " water to 2" of perlite

calibration wont help with the petco models....infact there is no real way to do it with them....cheap plastic and fused....I believve it still needs a blow torch...

The water should be in the perlite, not the perlite in the water. If you have a tub full of fruiting cakes and a pool of water with some perlite floating in it your bound for a contam.
