Subbs?? (pics)
    #1576186 - 05/25/03 11:04 AM (20 years, 9 months ago)

my scanner blows and i don't have a digital camera, so forgive me with these cruddy pictures

they have a smooth banded fawn-colored cap, a tannish color with a brown ring at the base of the cap. the gills are brown. the stems are somewhat reddish or pinkish and fiberish. no blueing is noticeable.

i am currently getting a sporeprint.

i my gueses are either paneolina foenisecii or pan subbs. of course i really can't make a final conclusion...the only conclusion i can make is that i need a digital camera!!

looks like paneolina foenisecii, the gills would have white margins if pan subbs, but if there is a black print then id say some pther type of psychoactive panaeolus

the gills would have white margins?? not doubting.....just trying to understand. i can see how a cap can have a light or darker margin, but how do the gills have a margin?

the younger ones that i picked had lighter chestnut colored gills, while these older, wetter specimens had a deeper chocolate color gill structure.

paneolina foenisecii or subs, I can NEVER tell them apart. anything that sticks out to help id them?

i don't plan on eating these suckers even if they were subbs, just trying to get a newbie feel of what i'm seeing out there. actually, i'm just glad that the shrooms are beginning to come up again.

i mean seriously.....is there anything more beautiful than a fresh fruiting shroom gleaming in the morning dew and sun?

regardless of what others say i still think that scanners take great mushroom collection photos.

You need to run the photos through a cleaning.

Like this;

And this..

Also, it always helps to first know a persons location
-For identifying fungus.

Keep shrooming,

...how do the gills have a margin?

On some species of mushrooms (Panaeolus subbalteatus is an example) there are sterile cells called cystidia growing on the edge of the gill (the margin) and few or none of the fertile, spore-producing cells called basidia. The cystidia (in this case) are colorless or nearly so, making the edge look whitish.

Examination of the gills with a magnifier (I use a 20x one) will make details like this obvious. The cells are mostly too small to see individually with the magnifier, but the pale edge of the gill will stand out.

Another genus this sort of feature is important in is Mycena. In that genus the gill margin will sometimes be darker than the rest of the gill (and often colored). The term for this is marginate, and the color of the marginate gill edge in Mycena is very important for accurate identification to species.

I hope that answers your question.
