Since I have a lot of Soviet jazz and rare electronica I began to digitalize my collection.

So, I started a vinyl blog:

davesaudio.blogspot.com

Reviews and downloads for all kinds of music. And from time to time there will be some other good stuff too, not just vinyls. Its like online diary, but meant for public.

This week I am doing India only, but next week might be some nice electronica.

My Flaming Lips 12" should be arriving soon. My of Montreal double LP ships at the end of the month, and a friend gave me a 7" that they released for this past Record Store Day! Sounds excellent

I got all their main albums on CD and vinyl now. Not really interested in their single vinyls, though.

I've yet to find anything of theirs on vinyl. But, hey, you wont find much in Fort Myers.

But thats okay; in a couple months I'll be moving to Asheville, which has very nice record stores!

In my opinion, the sound captured on vinyl is half the fun! Listening to music the way it was intended to be recorded and heard is quite the expeirence. I prefer that over the digital remasterization..takes the band out of the band!

Why does vinyl have to be considered "the way it was intended to be heard"? I don't see why an artist would intend for their music to be distorted through some shitty record/speakers so the song sounds nothing like it does live. I'll take a CD over a record any day, in fact, I'd take a CD over an iPod and all the free music I could download as well. Nothing can touch the sound quality of a CD.

I have no problem with people who thoroughly who love records and enjoy the old school sound/feeling, but to say the music is better that way or intended to sound that way is just silly IMO.

"shitty?" Hell no.
The sounds that the original musicians made; the analogue effects they sought after. The quality gives it character. I have old recordings done by the original bands and their later remastered. I highly prefer the original because I think it has that CHARACTER...that imperfection.

The remastered versions are almost perfect. Why would I want to hear a super clean remastered Minor Threat, when I can hear more emotion and style in the old version? It's raw--it's real. Same thing can go for jazz--listening to an old Louis or Ella or Duke record is more personable than its perfected predecessor. Its what the musicians had to work with and, for them, that was enough.

I'm glad you have your preference for music sounds. But did you have to come in this thread with a negative comment like that? You couldn't have just simply stated that you appreciate remastered versions better?

And obviously if you think all music on records sound like shit, you haven't actually listened to any good music on a good turntable with good speakers.

My point is that digital doesn't always mean remastered, some music is just recorded with better equipment and sounds exactly how the artist intends it to, and if it were on a record it would lose that sound quality.

I was simply stating my opinion like you were when you said "takes the band out of the band", I found that to be a very arrogant comment. I collect records myself, but if I claimed that they sounded better I would be lying. If you really love records, and it's not just a fad, then there's no reason for you to take offense to my comment.

I do understand that digital doesn't necessarily mean remastered. But my only intentions were to say when I buy a vinyl record from a band that is either putting out new music, or collecting rare goodies, I find vinyl to be a more personal experience from musician to listener. I enjoy the fact that I can admire the jackets, the multi-colored waxes, the notes and secret goodies you find inside (especially from local artists)

I'm not condeming CD's at all. My preference is just that of gets more pleasure out of spending money on the work put into such a work of art, rather than mp3s

I love all formats, including mp3s.

Music is music to me. But vinyl is awesome, and a lot of my favorite artists can't afford to put their work on vinyl, so CDs work just as well for me.

I purchased Bedlam and Octahedron at my local music shop. De-Loused and Frances on ebay, and then Amputechture on Omar's website, which two days later sold out. Got extremely lucky on that one!

Just picked these up today to add to the collection  Does anyone know any method for fixing warped vinyl? I made the mistake of leaving a record on the player while I was out of town for a few days and even though it was in a cool and dark room it's now warped pretty badly. I don't notice any degradation in sound quality but the needle's arm moves up and down quite a lot, I'm pretty pissed at myself because it was a brand new record too. :mad2:

Oooh, nice grabs!

Out of those, I also have American Beauty, used to have Atom Heart Mother, and the black and white Velvet Underground.

For a lot of my records the needle also moves up and down, but the pitch never really changes. Meaning it can just get bumpy but as long as the sound doesn't change I never really care. You can't really get warping out (as far as I know) and even the records I have that are warped I still listen to anyway. Hopefully for you they aren't so bad! :super:

Actually you can.  You just need some pieces of glass and your oven.

I've done it and it works.

Thanks newgui that makes me feel better about it. Good to know that glass oven fix works, I may end up doing that especially if the warping gets any worse or affects the sound at all.
