In order to create art you have to take in a lot of good inspiration.

For me hiking, adventures and life experience in general all contribute to the creative process. Music is an expression and it helps to have experiences to draw from and feelings/things to actually express...

I see nothing weird about reading contributing to the creative process. It's about feeding your mind good stimuli.

Very true.

Trying to figure out your own style and creative path takes work sometimes. I have about 20 tracks started, and have finished zero. Some are pretty close, but I find if I try to force myself to create something it won't work well. Sometimes you need to take breaks from a piece for a while and come back to it after you've had some time to workout how you want it to sound.

Are we talking chord progressions or lyrics or both here?  In my opinion, if you don't know your scales and chords you're shooting in the dark and severely impeding yourself.  I've got a couple books that were helpful in getting started writing if you're interested.  One thing that helped me was picking different popular artists and writing in their style before trying to write your own stuff.  If you end up having some success with that then you also have stuff you can try to sell to those artists - I've had some success with that in the past.  If you intend on doing that starting with people high on the Billboard charts as opposed to whoever your favorite artists might be is the best way to go.

As far as lyrics go, you should get a notebook and write every day.  No need to write entire songs yet if that's difficult, just write.  You won't like a lot of it but you will like some of it, and you can always rewrite things or borrow them to put them in songs.  Getting into the act of writing regularly makes it easier as well.

Hope some of this helps.

There has to be a point in what you are doing. There has to be a feeling to what you play. If you are having trouble writing a song then I think it is because you have nothing to say or there is no feel to it. Find a feel, find a point. Use your imagination, think about all the good or bad things you have been through, think back on all the memories, growing up, going to school, hanging out with friends. Think about all the people you've met, the people you know, your loved ones, think about how much you love your family and friends. Imagine you Are flying in the sky, imagine you are running like the wind, imagine  colors, hearts, rainbows, and birds. Imagine a world where everything is pure and full of life. Imagine no wars, no hate, no limits to what we can accomplish. Imagine all this, while you play your guitar.

Lately I've been picking up the bass and just jamming until I like something. I'll record it, then switch to drums and find a beat that fits the bass. Then I'll add some guitar, synth, keyboard, or whatever I feel like.

I've noticed that writing this way produces a wide variety of song genres as well. Every time you sit down and play a different emotion or style comes through.

Here's a link to my soundcloud. It only has 3 tracks, all of which are rough samples.

One is a bass jam I did one night, One is a guitar oriented track, and the other is a kind of dub type track that has a horrible drum kit

throw some chords together, sing over it, boom youve got a song. improve it until you like it and toss it if its not good. also you can start by making little bits of songs and then put them together.

I definitely agree there.  When I'm manic and barely sleeping I get quite creative.  Not really a method I can recommend to anyone though.
