Good coffee from a french press is simply a matter of process control. Grind size, water temp, amounts, steeping time. Control those well enough and you get a fantastic, inexpensive, and consistent cup of joe.

I've been living in the Dominican Republic for close to 24 years now and I will vouch for that. The best cigars in the world are also from the Dominican Republic.

But the coffee here is sublime. We can't get the top-shelf coffee here - it is against the law to sell export-grade coffee inside the country - but even the domestic-quality stuff knocks almost every other coffee you can buy on its ass, and I include Jamaica Blue Mountain in that category. The thing is, it is almost impossible to get DR coffee anywhere other than Japan and the DR itself. The Japanese have longstanding ironclad multi-decade contracts with the coffee exporters for over 95% of the export-grade stuff. In some years they get 100% of it.

There's scarcely a tourist who doesn't go home with at least a few bags of domestic-grade coffee, a box or two of cigars, and a bottle or two of rum (also the best in the world)
