Are Tablet PCs any good?

I'm thinking about buying a tablet PC today.

This one here to be exact.

I don't really know a great deal about them though. Are they worth investing money in, or would a laptop be better? Or maybe it would be better to wait until they're not such a 'new thing' and their prices drop down.

Any help would be appreciated.

They are cool but in no way a replacement for a laptop IMO. Their hard drives are small and most don't even have a cd-rom. All that said they are pretty cool.

I basically just want it for internet browsing and downloading music/movies to transfer onto my desktop PC. I know it's good for quite a bit more than that and I will probably play around with the other features, but really I'm just looking for something that I can use all over the house, not just while I'm sitting down at the desk.

How were you intending to download these files?  Android isn't a fully fledged operating system, and I don't know a ton about Android but I don't think you can just download anything you want and transfer it over.  I could be wrong on that though...

I have a samsung galaxy tab that runs on android and I love it.

Does everything I need it to.

Well I went ahead and brought a sony tablet. It's pretty good apart from the text input - it's very laggy and not really practical for typing anything other than a web address.
It does come with a built in playstation 1and nintendo 64 emulator though which is a bit of fun.
Playing crash bandicoot 1 again for the frist time in about 10 years.

it'll take a while to get used to but it seems like a good investment.

I searched for tablet threads and this one mentioned some so... I'm thinking about getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, do some of you have experiences with that model or tablet computers in general?

The Tab is badass. I own one and love it. I sync a lot of data between it and my Galaxy phone. The resolution is great but the battery life is what I love, it feels like I never have to plug it in except when I'm not using it.

The Nexus 7 is also great and a little more cost efficient.

Yeah, it really depends on how much you use it and what for. I've got one friend who made the jump from having a ten year old laptop he hardly ever used to an iPad and it was great for him to just pull up his bank account status, check Musician's Friend's stupid deal and watch netflix. If you're doing something that requires actively interacting with them for a long period the interface gets annoying (I'm sure it'd drive most of us nuts trying to type more than ~100 words on them) but for stuff like that they're fine.

I got a kindle fire HD the other day and its pretty bad ass. only thing that gets on my nerves is it doesnt come with a stand so I have to hold it or keep my head up while using netflix on it.

I plan on using it for the Web, checking email and whatnot... I'd also buy a keyboard for typing because I write a lot.

God no, definitely do not even consider it.  Get a Nexus 10.  FAR superior device, they don't even compare.

Superior in absolutely EVERYTHING
- better build quality
- 4 times the screen resolution
- better colour reproduction
- double the RAM
- 3-5x more powerful CPU
- 3-5x more powerful GPU
- better battery life

The only tablets on the market worth considering are the Nexus 7/10 and the iPad/iPad Mini.
