You're not cool or free-thinking * 2
    #15364854 -

I'm going to play the cynical asshole for a bit (what's new), and say that the portion of our character makeup that isn't inherited through genetics is wholly formed through a myriad of environmental influences. We all know it as the nature/nurture gang bang. But what I'm suggesting is that our assumptions about individual identity and personal autonomy are a cultural relish. You're "free" ability to choose a religion, for instance, was already chosen for you in the form of a permissible society. The fact you were given a choice, paradoxically, means you didn't get to choose. So, ironically, we believe that our sense of style and peculiarities are self chosen within a system: but I think it may be the case that it's just a fabricated collage of the elements we inherited within our own social system.

Yeah, we didn't choose to be born, nor did we get to choose which culture we were born into.

What else is new? :goodmorning:

It's one thing to simply enjoy a style of life that one enjoys, but it's another thing altogether to refer to another person's choice as "wrong" or to rationalize their behavior as being pathological or resulting from some sort of inadequacy or failing so as to create a sense of superiority or separation as yet another projection of a personal fear or control issue.

What he's saying, I think, is that a lot of the Shroomery is made of people who think they are cool free-thinkers by choice (by having an individual identity and personal autonomy), when in fact they are not the way they are because they choose to be, but because of their environment and genetics. It may be that shroomerites are cooler and more free-thinking than the rest of the public (though many times I've 'd @ some of the posts), but we are only on this site and think the way we do and all because of those two factors.

I think this thread is full of defensive reactions that spawned as a result of people feeling a little less cool or free-thinking than they thought "they" were

I'd call my remark sarcastic, not really defensive. It surprises me that you don't already realize that's exactly what this place is.

Sarcasm is cool.

I don't think the shroomery or even the pub is inherently sarcastic though.

Basically this. My main point is that "progressive" ideologies are still cultural artifacts. Even our Discovery Channel-Margaret Mead-Indiana Jones perspective on different walks of life is itself another viewpoint. The catch is that our opinions feel wholly thought out and deliberately chosen; after all, "the logic/evidence adds up to ______, so of course it makes sense." But we're not responsible for any of the components that form our own cognitive vehicle. It was assembled by a mind that is in the habit of assembly.

I think perhaps the confounding variable is change, and trying to explain where it comes from (Scroll: McKenna's novelty, et al). If we're only a shifting interaction of nature/nurture, then how do new ideas and viewpoints come to be?

This a big debate in intellectual copyright laws, and a few books have sprung from it. One that comes to mind is the "Quest for Authenticity." To my mind, no such thing exists.
