I'm looking for a second-hand camera for action pictures and off course mushroom hunting.
Is the Canon EOS 1000D a good purchase? What lens should I buy?

you're in love again? that was fucking quick! where did you meet this new dude? is he your new guitar teacher? you went from being all alone and not knowing what you were going to do to being in love in less then a week!

an 80 to 200 zoom might work out for you as far as action shots go... as far as mushroom pictures go, the standard lens that comes with the camera should be fine for a beginner... why don't you post your question in the mushroom hunting and identification forum... i'm sure someone there can help you...

I'm still 'in love' with the same guy off course. All the negative thoughts I had are gone

Depends how much you're paying for it...  I shoot with a 40D but have a Rebel (300D) for a backup body. If you're not going to get REAL into it, the Rebels are a good camera and take excellent pictures, but they don't offer the flexibility of the higher lines, which have much better ergonomics and controls.

As far as lenses go.  Everything Canon makes except the 1DS's and the #D line are crop bodies; the Rebels are 1.6. On a 35mm film body, or a non-crop digital, 50mm is considered the equivalent of what you see with the naked eye; on a crop body a 24-35mm is about as close as it gets (35mm x 1.6 = 56mm). Something like the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 ultrasonic is a good choice for a reasonably priced all-round lens.  And it has some macro-focus ability.  I wouldn't go with anything that has a numerically higher f-stop than that, 4.5 (and even 3.5, but not to the same severity) is a pretty freakin' slow aperture and takes a lot of light, high ISO, or a flash (and the on-board flashes are pretty crumby). I have one of those lenses and its a nice general purpose lens, but I almost always use it with a hot-shoe mounted flash or outdoors.  I have the same lens in a 70-210mm length and hardly ever use it; anything past about 190mm has to be shot at a really high shutter speed to be hand-held (plus the bulk is just generally a pain in the ass, it makes the camera real front-heavy, and I even have a battery pack/vertical grip hanging off the bottom of mine adding a bunch of weight to the body that counters it out).  Stay away from the cheap-ass plastic zoom lenses that typically come with the Rebel kits, they really are junk. The kit lenses for the upper lines are usually pretty good.

That being said, I almost never use my zooms... VERY rarely. I REALLY like prime lenses. I have a 35mm f/2.0 and a 50mm f/1.8 that I use almost exclusively, the 35mm almost never comes off the camera.  The big apertures of those lenses is excellent for low-light and action shots and the sharpness puts even the best zooms to shame.  Really, I only use the zooms say when I'm shooting a wedding reception and want the flexibility, or just general purpose-type stuff (ie, my kid).  I do ALL artsy work and wedding ceremonies with the primes. The 50mm f/1.8 is the best bargain Canon makes.
