Aquaponics questions
    #15068786 -

I have never grown anything successfully with aquaponics and I know it's a pretty complicated subject when it comes to nutrient and chemical levels and whatnot.. But there a really diverse amount of information out there and honestly I rather have my own ideas and then have specific questions when I want to know more. I'll probably have a large outdoor aquaponics garden come spring ready for fish and plants.. But messing around in my free time I've just set up a system that will fill one large grow bed or several smaller ones and cycle to and from a 29 gallon fish tank. My specific questions are

1) I dont want to grow basil or lettuce. I'm thinking of a well draining compost substrate containing coir for strawberries and more complicated plants. this changes everything since I was thinking hyrdoponics substrates before. Also less cool so I can do both if the nutrients are in the specific substrate. So that's when I started thinking, I need to add a separate filter for those more nutrient based substrates before it drains back into the tank. I'd like the water to be clear. Any ideas?

2) I'm thinking I'm probably going to be using shroomery print contest award winning blugill rock bass hybrids in my tank. What kind of plant to fish ratio am I looking for with a 29 gallon fish tank and about 3 1/2' x 1 1/2' grow area?

Thanks for reading And also any other aquaponics related info for beginners would be appreciated also.

strawberries are commonly grown in coco hydro setups.  either drip or circulating pipe type design.  recirculating you wont have clear water...maybe there is some way but all the tannins and such in the coco is going to give you water like tea.  im not sure why it would matter...

Are you going to be growing these indoors or out?

I liked the concept of aquaponics, but I felt like I would end up caring more for the fish and less for the plants, and I like horticulture, not fishticulture.
But seriously folks...

You don't like the idea of walking out back, snagging up a tilapia,  picking some veggies and having a meal?  I love the idea.

No, it's that any system is not no maintenance.  And I would rather be focusing on caring for plants, than switching my main focus to caring for fish.

Aquaponics is roughly 4 times faster than regular hydroponics. This setup is to be inside for appearance purposes mainly with colored lights and I want the water clear. I'm just going to do more simple plants inside and save the dripping coir substrates for outdoor growing I guess.

I don't know how resilient blugill rock bass are but I have worked with several aquaponics systems and know that tilapia are commonly used because they breed well in captivity and are very tolerant of fluctuations in water pH and temperature, which is something that will probably occur with a new grower
