aspen boletes
    #15077107 -

Hi
I'm new here. I thought I would add this about my novice efforts at mushroom hunting. We live in the Moab area and its known that Boletus Eduli grow up in the Lasal Mountains up above us. We've found these periodically, but I realize now after reading some further identification literature that sometimes we've been eating Leccinum species (aspen bolete). I just picked a lot and was cutting them when they turned blue. I discarded them. However, we have eaten these before with no ill effects. Pan fried in oil, with some vinegar and wine, they were delicious and we ate a lot (6 people). I have read that they can make you sick - but not in these cases. However, I'm giving up on eating them from now on. Has anyone here eaten them and got sick?

Leccinum insigne and scabrum are eatable

I think most leccinum sp. are but proper ID is always needed. Now, eatable and worth eating maybe two different things!

I have eaten what we call Birch Boletes, and have survived! They seem good, but maybe not choice.

I have not personally become ill from eating Leccinums, but I know people who have. To the best of our current knowledge, there appears to be an undescribed species with an orange cap that grows under aspen. The results of eating it are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is definitely not an effect of individual sensitivity or allergy - I know of two incidents involving several people, where everybody that ate the mushrooms became sick. It is also not a case of eating undercooked specimens, something that will also make you sick if you're eating Leccinum.

The main reason it's difficult to track down is that the victims have eaten all of the mushrooms. If you don't have any specimens, it's pretty tough to figure our specific ways to figure out how to identify the bad ones.

On the positive side, it must not be a common species, or there would be a lot more cases. Also, if you are willing to not eat orange capped Leccinums growing under aspen then you should be safe.

Happy mushrooming!
