I agree with the emergency loans. Not with them being tax free mind you. But congress may get in the way when upon the brink of instability. And you can say whatever you like about survival of the fittest in economic terms, but remember that Armstrong didnt beat cancer without medical aid.

so you agree then that the fed should've issued emergency loans to only select companies (which the fed employees are invested in) rather than fair emergency loans to all companies who need them?

and that the federal reserve should issue huge amounts of "emergency loans" to foreign banks- 1. without asking congress and 2. with american taxpayer money while america is in the midst of a recession?

Where is the source that states fed employees are invested in these specific banks? Why shouldn't we allow for emergency loans to foreign banks just as much as to domestic banks? No man is a island, and the instability or even failure of another country's economy will affect ours. Taxpayer money it may be, but it's not free. Must be repaid and if I had my way it would have interest. Their not taking our money. But borrowing it. A huge majority of US debt is actually owed to the taxpayers. Not a foreign country.

idk it's just pretty horrifying to me that the federal reserve has been throwing around trillions of dollars like that to select companies and especially foreign banks/companies without any approval of congress

I think the real question is how do I get a job as a bank CEO so I can beg for billions in bailout money and give myself larger bonuses next year?

the current president of the federal reserve has investmetns in AIG and GE- two companies who received bailout funds.

quoted from the article in OP-
Quote:
The GAO report noted on Sep. 19, 2008, William Dudley, who is now the President of the FRBNY, was granted a waiver to let him keep investments in AIG and General Electric, while at the same time the Federal Reserve granted bailout funds to the same two companies.

and i highly doubt he's the only person at the federal reserve that held investments in the select companies and banks that received bailouts...

also from the article
Quote:
The Federal Reserve has neither explained how they legally justified several of the emergency loans, nor how they decided to provide assistance to certain firms but not others.

no. When a company goes bankrupt thats the market saying that they are not efficient and should shut down, so a better company with better policies can step up and do the job better. when we bail it out we are only going against what the free market is telling us whats best to do.. and to not even ask the people of the country if their money can be lent?

What is this free market thing? And how does it tell us things. How much can it tell us?

The companies weren't bankrupt - it was an overnight loan due to a lack of liquidity, but with way more than enough solvency to pay back the loans in a short amount of time.

The whole point of these low-interest loans is to keep faith in the system by the consumers to avoid a total collapse.
