Toyota truck or Mitsubishi Delica Van. Gas vs. Diesel?
    #14920807 -

Toyota 4x4 or Mitsubishi 4x4 van?

Spending limit: approx. $10,000-$12,000cdn

I was really wanting to get a diesel, because diesels are sweet and ultimately will probably be cheaper to drive once gas goes through the roof. Obviously they are also super reliable and last forever ... however they are also more expensive to maintain and repair. so it's 50/50...

I was largely leaning towards a 95ish right hand drive Mitsubishi Delica imported from Japan.

They are kind of pigs on fuel, but capable 4x4 and fairly comfortable and easy to camp in/out of.

However, they are right hand drive and my provincial insurance company is trying to ban RHD, meaning if i was to get in an accident, they lean towards writing off the vehicle.

Plus, it's a somewhat rare import, meaning parts and service is a bit of a hassle...

BUT
, it is a diesel, is unique, will last forever and they are available for about 10,000 with low milage (+/- 100,000kms) straight from Japan.

VS.

late 90's or early 2000's toyota 4x4 extra cab (or 3 or 4 door), a tacoma or something similar with 200,000km's give or take.

The toyota's hold their value - so despite being a 98 or so it will still be $10,000 for a vehicle with 200k on it. Obviously it will be gas ... a v6 4x4 gets comparable fuel efficiency to the Delica, but i predict diesel will be cheaper than gas in the near future.

A toyota truck will probably last forever as well. I could see a truck being more "my style" as far as outdoor recreation goes. I like that fact that parts are plentiful and anyone could service it..

The camper van was appealing for music festivals and what not, but i am sure i could use a similar setup with a truck camping and canopy...

Anyways, those are my thoughts - i was vehemently for the Delica for the longest time, but am starting to sway. Trucks are certainly more fun and practical ...

What say you?

I'd go with the diesel van, it can most likely run on biodiesel without any modifications as well.

But biodiesel is extremely uncommon, and more expensive. Not my thing. I certainly wouldn't be producing it with waste grease, or anything like that.
