Yes, he played the race card there, but the cop was over the line. Not racist but definintly should have not arrested the guy.  Both parties could have handled that better.

man breaks into a house, at least according to the dispatcher, a neighbor
called it in, cop arrives, the man claims to live there and refuses to
produce ID proving he lives at that residence, why should this guy not have
been arrested?

It was handled poorly by both parties. If I were in the position of gates, I would have been awfully upset at the police as well. The cop's fault was not clearly stating why they were there and while gate's had a right to be pissed, he should have been more cooperative.

it doesnt get much more clear than that, cop receives a call, responds to
the call, finds the suspects there asn opposed to clearing things up by
simply showing the cop clear proof of residence decides to escalate things
with a racist diatribe... yeah, the cop was so totally in the wrong for
protecting the community and not just shooting a black man instead

Never mind then, I had not seen that. Gates was more at fault then the cop, but when it comes down to it Gates was probably correct in why the cops were called in the first place. Still, no reason to behave like a petulant child. The comments from Gates in that report are outlandish.

Certainly, had Gates stated his case calmly like it was portrayed in the media, the review would be correct. Now that I think about this more and the fact that I have been in similar situations, I would have arrested the guy as well. The way this was portrayed by the times and others made it seem like the cop was the one being a cunt.
