Really?  Not even as good as Kaku?  No way - he's a league above Kaku IMO.  As far as Sagan goes, they did different kinds science. Sagan didnt really do much in physics, more with space exploration and SETI stuff.

If you asked a bunch of physicists who was the best alive today, they would probably say Ed Witten.  Though that would certainly not be unanimous as there is different ideas on how much of what he does is physics.

Okay, maybe Kaku was a low blow.  But I still think he's no better than, say, Neil deGrasse Tyson.

As a popularizer, I agree.  Neil deGrasse Tyson is the best physics/science popularizer out there.  But as far a doing actual science, hawking is pretty leet.  I dont think deGrasse Tyson even publishes anymore, and I know that Kaku doesnt.

I think people feel sorry for him and hes also Intelligent. People feeling sorry for him rather than thinking hes the greatest physicist is probably why hes so popular.

I too am not a huge fan of Hawking. I think alot of what he says is meant to create controversy. Like him doubting Einstein. I mean, the guy is dead, he cant fight back. Im waiting for Hawking to take on Galileo.

In what way does he doubt Einstein?  Do you mean by working on a unified field theory he doubts relativity?  Even Einstein worked on a unified field theory.  If/when such a theory is developed it must reduce to relativity in the right regiemes.  In that sense, I wouldn't say he 'doubts' Einstein.  (Although, I am assuming what you mean by 'doubts')
