Scaly inky cap question

Hello, fellow shroomerites. In my neck of the woods in Northwest Iowa, I've found a couple beautiful, huge patches of scaly inky caps(sorry, no pictures). Many of them have specks of sap oozing out of them, usually a yelowish color. I looked around, and found no references to these mushrooms 'sweating'. Is this a common occurence?
I was planning on eating some. I understand they may cause some stomach upset, but I ain't too worried. I've eaten a number of alcohol inky caps this year with no problems, even testing it out with beer, and still no upset.

Just because you "didn't feel anything" doesn't mean you aren't doing irreversable damage to your liver & kidneys! To knowingly consume alcohol and" Tippler's Bane" mushrooms together is reckless, assinine behavior IMHO. :thumbdown:

I know what you're saying, but maybe hes curious about the reaction. It is represented as non-fatal and relatively mild in every book i have read, i have even thought of intentionally consuming small amounts of both to experience the symptoms.  Andrew Weil once ate 6 grams of Hashish to experience a Cannabis overdose and prove it was relatively harmless. Hes not crazy , Hes a pioneer in alternative medicine. I imagine Cannabis is more understood than the Coprine + alcohol reaction, but i still appreciate the OPs idea of a Calculated risk.

scaly inky caps? I've never heard C. Atromentarius/insignis called that. Are they shaggy manes?(coprinus comatus?:lol: or do you mean MAGPIE inky caps? (coprinus picacious)?

Yea, just google it. They're Coprinopsis variegata. I don't own a camera, but they are def that.
When I tried it with alcohol, I only had a couple inky caps and one or two beers. I wasn't trying to fuck up my liver or anything, just doing a little bio-assay. Coprine is similar to Disulfiram, which is given to alcoholics to discourage drinking. From what I've read, it just gives unpleasant hangover-like effects, not necessarily causing major damage. But hey, that's why we try these things. For Science!

I found some Coprinopsis variegata last month, but didn't take home to eat because I drink too much.

To tell ya the truth, I kinda wish I would have done an experiment also.

Without guinea pigs we would not know too much about mushroom edibility

I've actually seen similar things in regards to ink caps, long time ago that is. I don't pick them or even mess with them anymore tho, but I do recall seeing similar things, and I believe it to be something related to the black liquid it releases, possibly in its younger form? I'm really not sure.

You're really not missing anything, the effects are similar to that of Antabuse, the stuff they give alcoholics that make them sick when they drink. I've heard it often times compared to mild opiate withdrawal, general uncomfortable feelings, restlessness, sweating, vomiting, skin irritation. I would avoid intentional sickening yourself my friend.

I didn't know that Coprinopsis variegata was known to be poisonous when mixed with alcohol, but I had a feeling, because it was an inky cap

Is it a right assumption to believe that all inky caps are poisonous to be consumed with alcohol then?

I guess that would depend on how you would define 'poisonous'. even alcohol in your system can cause reactions.

I guess that would depend on how you would define 'poisonous'. even alcohol in your system can cause reactions.



I meant that the mixture will make me very ill, cause I can handle alcohol very well

I read that alcohol inkies, scaly inky caps and Coprinus insignis are the only ones that you have to worry about with alcohol. Shaggy manes are fine, for example.
I satueed up those scaly inky caps and put them in my spaghetti last night. They weren't the best tasting fresh, but they were just fine cooked.
