Man I have to say this may not be a strong way to start a thread.  Maybe "Are there any truths to popular analogies?"  I don't know just kind of awkward.

You might enjoy it. If you ever want a break from Becker, pick up Cooper's translation. Apology, Phaedo, Euthyphro, Protagoras, Crito, Parmenides, and the seventh letter are all pretty good uses of time left on earth IMO. Not terribly long and pretty funny.

Apology in particular is hilarious.

I'd read the life of socrates on wiki first to make sure you get the references.

OF course there is. You can see the truth. Life is like fire. Life is like a mountain. But obviously the analogy is different in each case. In the case of fire, the similarities are that it reproduces, consumes, and dies, ever changing. In the case of the mountain, life is similar because you can climb life and reach goals - life is an obstacle and a reward.

Everything, in some way, is analogous to everything else. You might think therefor everything is an analogy and therefor there is no truth to the matter. But this would be wrong.

It point of metaphors is not that there is an analogy - because there is an analogy between everything if you look at them in the right way.

The point of metaphors is to pick analogies that are obvious to the reader. If I said that A mountain is like the ocean, you might be confused until I pointed out that the ocean is like a mountain in reverse, getting harder the deeper you go. Because I have to point this out, it makes a bad analogy.  an analogy none the less.
