I have devised a theory.

Bear with me for a second.

I've devised a theory as to Knuckle's true nature, referencing the popular anthromorphic echidna character from the Sonic The Hedgehog video game series.

Knuckles lives on "Angel Island".

As we all know, it is actually Compton, CA as the whole atmosphere there is comprised of Angel Dust (PCP); hence the name, Angel's Island. Obviously Knuckles is a random hobo breathing in the happy air, and is now at the drugged up point of believing he is a crimson Rastafarian echidna (not humanly possible) on a quest to find a "giant emerald", actually referring to the lb of weed he lost.

I imagine it would be nearly impossible to subdue Knuckles if he had a head full of PCP.
