Is it unhealthy to crack your knuckles?

i have a bad habit of cracking my fingers, back, and even toes. what kind of negative effects does this have?

My ankles do that as well, can't help it. I suppose it's not too good in the long term; i believe I once heard something about fluid building up in the joint and we all know that's not a good thing; fluid in the joint.

i crack my fingers out of habit in 3 places countless times every day.  i find myself trying to pop them when they won't even pop.  if its bad for you im fucked.  hard.

I asked my guitar professor about this (he is a living encyclopedia of knowledge). He basically said that it was inconclusive (or a non-issue, I can't remember) but that it's probably fine. Seemed to be OK by Bruce Lee, as well :shrug:

Many joints in the human body are lubricated with a substance known as synovial fluid. This fluid tends to collect between knuckle joints, and over time it produces bubbles of nitrogen gas. A knuckle cracker hyper-extends the knuckle joints, allowing this build-up of nitrogen gas to escape. The released gas creates the satisfying popping sound which designates a successful knuckle cracking. It can take from several minutes to several hours before the synovial fluid creates more nitrogen bubbles, which is why most knuckle crackers can only produce one pop per knuckle.

One of my Biology professors was saying that it's a wives tale that it's unhealthy and makes them big and that it's perfectly fine.

Cracking your knuckles lets trapped gasses escape from the joints. These gasses can travel up into the stratosphere where they can cause global warming.

I've heard mixed opinions :shrug:

But I can say from experience, that I've been a compulsive knuckle-cracker since I was a kid. I'm now in my mid 30's and have no issues. I'm a busy carpenter, and I would know right away if any problems were coming.
But I can say, my knuckles are pretty fat, there is about an inch of room between my wedding ring and finger because I had to get it twice as large due to my large knuckles :lol:
Not sure if this is due to the over-zealous cracking, but is should be noted
