WikiLeaks Haiti: The Earthquake Cables (and others)
    #14667422 -

There is a lot of stuff going on in this one but here is a sample of
the documents....

Despite reports from its own embassy that the post-quake situation in Haiti was “calm,” the United States launched a massive military operation that sparked an international backlash

“Security” vs. Humanitarian Relief

Following her boss’s talking points, Cheryl Mills, Clinton’s chief of staff, “assured Preval...that the military was here for humanitarian relief and not as a security force,” explains a January 19 cable.

But that’s not what journalists on the ground saw.

On January 19, Democracy Now!’s crew along with Haïti Liberté’s Kim Ives arrived at the General Hospital around 1 pm, shortly after troops from the 82nd Airborne Division. They found the soldiers, guns in hand, standing behind the hospital’s closed main gate. The troops had orders to provide “security” by denying entrance to a crowd of hundreds, including injured earthquake victims and family members of patients bringing them food or medicine.

“Watching the scene in front of the General Hospital yesterday said it all,” said Ives in a Democracy Now! interview the next day. “Here were people who were going in and out of the hospital bringing food to their loved ones in there or needing to go to the hospital, and there were a bunch of...US 82nd Airborne soldiers in front yelling in English at this crowd. They didn’t know what they were doing. They were creating more chaos rather than diminishing it. It was a comedy, if it weren’t so tragic.... They had no business being there.”

The journalists finally managed to get into the hospital and alerted the hospital’s interim director, Dr. Evan Lyon, about the problem. He immediately sent word down that the soldiers should stand down and open the gate. They did, but then positioned themselves in the driveway, among the injured hobbling into the hospital, as an unnecessary and unrequested security force, contrary to what Mills had promised Préval.

Three months later, US troops walking around in what appeared to be foot patrols could still be seen in downtown Port-au-Prince. “I don't think we need soldiers with guns. We need engineers the most," Brital, a rapper in one of Haiti’s most popular hip hop group, the Barikad Crew, told Inter-Press Service. “I'd prefer to see soldiers who could educate instead of those with guns. Soldiers that can come and build roads, bridges, universities and hospitals.”

The enormous influx of US military personnel, weapons and equipment into the airport prompted a chorus of protest from mid-level French, Italian and Brazilian officials, as well as the aid group Doctors Without Borders. They were outraged that planes carrying vital humanitarian supplies were being prevented from landing, or delayed, sometimes for days.

“We had a whole freaking plane full of the friggin’ medicine!” Douglas Copp, an American rescue worker, said outside a UN base not long after the quake. The US military, which had taken over the Port-au-Prince airport, would not give clearance for the Peruvian military plane to land. It had to divert to the Dominican capital, 150 miles away. “In Santo Domingo, we got a bus, and we came into Haiti with just the things we could fit in the bus,” Copp exclaimed.

Much more can be found here and on other sites. This whole release is aimed to
make government happening more transparent. I love when we get to see how we go
about our shady business.......

haiti looking for more handouts

security was needed, haiti is a very unpleasant place, in time of crisis, it's a real shithole

Aid workers hoping to distribute food, water and other supplies to a shattered Port-au-Prince are warning their efforts may need more security Friday as Haitians grow increasingly desperate and impatient for help.

Security may have been needed but not in the numbers we provided. It was much
overkill especially with the UN in there. I think the number was aroun 20,000
at one point. Cant find a link at the moment. But also this....

"Now, the Haitian people, for instance, can read in French (and eventually Kreyòl) what the US embassy has been up to there. The cables make clear that the US embassy in Haiti was the real power behind the throne of US-installed de facto Prime Minister Gérard Latortue after the 29 February 2004 coup d'état against former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide."

Here is some more information on an unrelated manner about the happenings in Haiti

Recently released diplomatic cables by WikiLeaks show how much pressure Washington is giving to Port-au-Prince that seem to ruin the country's road to recovery after the 12 January 2010 earthquake.

An Al Jazeera report in the attached YouTube video says the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere was bullied to American pressure. Several US companies are profiting from it since the January 2010 quake, the cables said.

The US Embassy and contractors for clothing giants like Levis Strauss and Hanes signaled displeasure at Haiti's plan to increase the minimum wage for factory workers to $5 minimum wage per day but American officials advised Haitian government that it "did not take economic reality into account," suggesting $3 per day instead.

The secret spiller also revealed that Venezuela—a US enemy—offered Haiti crude oil on relaxed, lucrative terms but the cables alleged that energy companies and Washington twisted the arm of Haiti to prevent the deal from going through.

The cables also suggested to what extent the US is controlling the country. During a visit by Sec. Hillary Clinton, she was described to have repetitively attempted to talk Preval and Bellerive to set up state-run refugee camps, which the Haiti government thought was risky or could lead to protests.

In another YouTube video by Democracy Now, Kim Ives of Haiti Liberté said that the height of arrogance is "when an ambassador is pushing around a president of a country telling them what to do, and they don't understand this, they don't understand that."

There are many more interesting revelations such as multi-million dollar government housing contracts that US companies were alleged to have profited from according to the report of WSWS.

oh come now, let's go further back and discuss how we assisted haiti in a
coup to get rid of communist duvalier and install Arisede only to oust
Aristede and install Preval, a cooperative communist... did I mention that
Haiti is really a shithole when they arent in crisis?

Haitians could be given all of the money and resources in the world and they would still be destitute.

They've been bailed out throughout the century and they are still hacking each other up.

Then we should let them do it. Stop giving them "aid" while trying to
make money of the situation or shadow-guide them  politically into an "area" we are comfortable with. Leave them alone altogether

there's no money to be made in/from haiti, money made because of haiti is
no more than the exploitation of the people or their situation and most
times it's the charitable groups that do so, any money our government
dumps on haiti is wasted on ones in power and there's no return

Now that's just flat out rude.

Maybe Pris would agree however, that Haiti is such a shitty and deplorable place to live because of of the US's trade policy towards them:

http://www1.american.edu/TED/haitirice.htm

Specifically how Haiti was self sufficient, as far as (everything) rice production for hundreds of years, until in the mid 1980's production rates fell rapidly displacing thousands if not tens of thousands of rice and other farmers and business owners, etc....all the while US imports of "Miami rice" were on the constant increase.  Even before the earthquake people were eating mudcakes, because imported US foods were just too expensive for the average Haitian earner to purchase.  I could go on and on.  But then again, I could just blame HAARP and the illuminati.
