Songwriting

How do you do it? Anything special? Take it as it comes? Sit down and go for it?

Where do you draw inspiration from?

How "successful" do you feel you are at songwriting? By that I just mean, how many songs do you/have you written that were more than mediocre.

Just some thoughts, but I am mostly interested in how to write songs. I've sort of been slowly building up my skills in songwriting and I have finally written a song (almost, just needs to be polished up) and I'm honestly really happy with it.

The problem that I keep coming across is most of the lyrics that have been coming to me for the past 2 years or so have been in the form of rap because that's what really broke out the songwriting in me, but I play acoustic guitar and write for acoustic guitar. Along with my words sounding more like rap, they often times feel even further removed from acoustic guitar in the sense of being more poetic than anything and I wonder if I should just keep them on paper.

I've managed with this song because it is a love song, so the poetic nature isn't a problem. To answer one my own question, most of my inspiration is based on feelings that I have about different things and then the other aspect is lyrics that just come to me. This song, for example, I drew from my girlfriend who I care for deeply and I was able to really pull my feelings together and put them on paper along with an appropriate sounding tune on the guit.

The other part that I've realized, and maybe this is common songwriting practice, is that I just need to let it come out. That is to say, don't wait for magical lyrics, but keep writing down thoughts and you will find good lyrics.

So watcha think?
