Re: Can someone help me with Windows Vista? [Re: Acaterpillar]

  Dude use the XP cd.  Boot to the CD, and when prompted, either delete the partions on the HDD so it's one mass off unallocated space and install to that, or just choose the windows partition and overwrite.    It'll work either way.

Press Enter.  That'll take you to this screen:

Follow the instructions and either delete all those partitions there so it's only one and it'll say something like, "unallocated space".  Just hit enter and install to that.  It'll format it and do all the work for ya.

Alternatively, just press enter on whatever partition in that list is your active windows partition, and it'll just install it to that.

Either one is fine, but the first method will give you more space.

Windows aborts the setup before I'm allowed to delete the partition.

Does it give an error message or just it just cut off?

My money is on bad hardware then.  There's no reason that should not work; afterall there won't be any software conflicts because you're  not in a true windows environment.  Download some diagnostic tools that can be booted from a CD and run it.  My bet is HDD or RAM.

By bad do you mean incompatible or broken?

Broken.  It's probably hitting a sector of the HDD or an address of the RAM that it can't read and return it gives an error.

I'm positive it's hardware.  We've already taken the software aspect out of it just by being in DOS (or psuedo-dos, they don't really have true DOS anymore.)

Well shit. I'll run that ultimate boot .iso here in a little bit and let you know what it says.

I guess this problem probably wont be fixable without hiring a technician to fix the hardware? So until then I most likely wont be able to install XP? :frown:

No worries.  Laptop is easy if the HDD and RAM are right in the bottom panels.  If not, you may need to disassemble the case, and it's a lot of screws.  Either way, run the diag and let me know what pops up and what system you have.  You can usually google the model # and find a step by step pictorial of the process.

So I tried putting the ISO on a disk and running the CD from boot manager but windows was unable to read it.

So then I extracted the files to the CD instead but windows was still unable to read it, and I haven't been able to find any clear instructions anywhere so I'm not entirely sure what I'm doing wrong

Hmm..    I mean an ISO is an ISO  lol..  Make sure the disc type you're creating is an "image".  Don't choose data disc then burn an iso to it, you need to select "make disc from image file".  The two are completely different burning methods.

Ah that must be the problem. Thanks Newbie.

If I'm not able to locate the Vista CD and I am unable to install XP, is there any way I can revert Vista back to its original state? Will there be a default restore point of Vista when first installed?

If you have a major brand PC there should be a recovery option that'll load from the partition.  Newer models it's F8 during boot, then "Repair my computer".  Others are usually F10 or Ctrl+F something.

Check the hardware though first.  Restoring an OS on a bad HDD is like remodelling a car with a bad engine.  No point in it...

I'm not seeing the option in Windows Vista to burn the disc as an image. Do I need to download some freeware to do this?

Use nero burning rom or something.  Any basic 3rd party burning program will do this.

Thanks for all the help Newbie I appreciate it.

Old thread, and I hate to bump it from this far back, but it's the exact same topic.

I must of been high, because I completely forgot at the time of creating this thread that there was a Sony memory stick stuck inside of my SD slot. Could this have been the reason why it was having trouble recognizing some of the hardware? I recently removed the memory stick with some unfolded paper clips, but I haven't attempted to boot XP from BIOS again yet.

Anyways, I'm about to give this another try. My audio interface is compatible with XP but not Vista so I really need to revert back to use it with my computer.
