History of Opium

Before the 18th century opium was employed sparingly by the Cninese. During the 18th century the British required Chinese tea, but they had no goods for exchange. In 1773 the British conquered Bengal Province and aquired the monolopy over raw opium. The opium was them smuggled into China and given to the people, purposely addicting them. China then proclaimed war on Britan and China lost the war in 1842, in exchange Britan obtained Hong Kong, its harbor, and opend trade with china. In the treaty of 1860 China was required to legalize opium within its borders. Britan owned Hong Kong for 100 years.

According to the book "Hallucinogenic Plants- A golden guide":
In 13th century Asia Minor, organized murderers, rewarded with hashish, were known as hashishins from which may come the term assassin
in European languages.

Overlooked by whom? It seems pretty well documented to me. If you mean that many people don't know/care about it - sure, but that goes for most of history. Most people don't give a fuck whatsoever, regardless of the topic. They just want their iPhone 35 to arrive in the mail.

Every years-long thread bump is the same. It's all started by a new poster who's not used to checking post dates yet, and the subsequent replies are all people replying to posts that are years old and will never receive a response...

It's kinda trippy when you put it into perspective.

supposedly the hash they smoked made them better assasin's also

This thread is two and a half years old and noone ever remarked that the arabic word "hashish" (حشيش) just means "grass" (and denotes the green grass that grows on the meadows and is eaten by goats and cows).

Why the assassins are called assassins (= the grass-men) is not clear until today. Marco Polo´s story about them may not be true (he said they were given drugs made from herbs (probably mostly opium) in order to make them addicted and loose their grip on reality, which made them act like one huge medieval manson family under the leadership of a guy called Hassan as-Sabbah, a strange old guy who never left his stronghold on the top of a mountain in Kurdistan.)

The other version of the origin of the word assassin is that the radical sect which emerged from of As-Sabbah´s heritage spread out towards syria during the following century, where the exalted religious fanatics were called grass-people by the local population because they seemed so weird and spaced out as if they were smoking all the time.

Assasins
Quote:
The term hashishiyya or hashishi as used by Muslim sources is used metaphorically in its abusive sense (i.e. "irreligious social outcasts", "low-class rabble", etc.).

Quote:
Their contemporaries in the Muslim world would call them hash-ishiyun, "hashish-smokers"; some orientalists thought that this was the origin of the word "assassin", which in many European languages was more terrifying yet ... The truth is different. According to texts that have come down to us from Alamut, Hassan-i Sabbah liked to call his disciples Asasiyun, meaning people who are faithful to the Asās, meaning "foundation" of the faith. This is the word, misunderstood by foreign travelers, that seemed similar to "hashish".

Quote:
Many scholars have argued, and demonstrated convincingly, that the attribution of the epithet "hashish eaters" or "hashish takers" is a misnomer derived from enemies of the Isma'ilis and was never used by Muslim chroniclers or sources. It was therefore used in a pejorative sense of "enemies" or "disreputable people". This sense of the term survived into modern times with the common Egyptian usage of the term Hashasheen in the 1930s to mean simply "noisy or riotous". It is unlikely that the austere Hassan-i Sabbah indulged personally in drug taking ... there is no mention of that drug hashish in connection with the Persian Assassins – especially in the library of Alamut ("the secret archives").

As far as I can tell the story of the assassins using hash is mostly just for fun.
