so no1 answered me any pearls?

most oysters dont produce a pearl and the quality of the ones in the types you'd eat is poor

I've found a few starters but they hadn't become actual pearls

what changes the quality of an oyster to make it produce a pearl

the shell lining is different, it's more of a mother of pearl than in regular oysters and they look a lot more like a scallop than an oyster

I love oysters.  Put some hot sauce and horseradish on them and I'll slurp them right down.

No, I've never shucked them so if there ever was one in them I doubt it would make it to the table.

I shucked them once.  I bought a special knife for doing it and I cut the fuck out of my hand.  I didn't really  know what I was doing.

I live in the country so there isn't a huge option on good sea food.

I do wanna try some good ones at a real oyster bar.
Till pris mentioned it, I never even knew an oyster bar existed.

so how is shell lining related to nacre and iridescence?

I've watched the guys shuck them and they make it look easy but I'm like you, if I tried to do it I'd starve to death before I got one open and I'd end up with a stump instead of a hand.

the pearl and edible oysters are actually 2 different families and within
those families are a sub type, abalone produce pearls too bt they're
blister pearls because abalone have no clotting mechanism there's no way
of surgically implanting a seed for the pearls to make a free pearl in
them, the abalone would bleed to death

oddly enough, some conchs make pearls too but they're red/pink

this is what's often seen as mother of pearl, it's abalone

I tried oysters a few years ago, but they grossed me out. I like muscles so I may try them again. I have no problem eating sushi or sashimi.

I got bored as a kid, was grounded for a long time and the only recreation
that was available to me was books, I literally went through everything
including the encyclopedia, how many 7th graders did you know that were
reading james clavel and faulkner

They didn't even teach books when I was in 7th grade.
It was still paste and pasta artwork and short bus trips to the shrink.
You lucky bastard and your books.

you may have been a kid but obviously not brought up in the same environment

did you have video games as a kid?
I had an atari 2600 and about 5 games so it got old quick

it's your prerogative to believe what you want but I got a firsthand
retelling of life on the chisholm trail from my great grandmother, I
heard stories about her father and some of his poker games, many
involving BigFoot Wallace, about his term as a deputy sherrif and getting
bushwhacked, shot and a piece of a button from that ambush killed him
about 30 years later, I got to hear about the civil war and of my great,
great grandfather deserting from the army to plant and harvest, about him
being fined 13 cents for losing 3 bullets

these and many others are stories my kids and grandkids will get to hear

who is bigfoot wallace you ask? like mom used to tell me,
you have an encyclopedia, look it up

oysters on the half shell
:homerdrool:

shuck 'em fresh and have a little gastrique on the side, with a nice blanc de blanc, or a six pack of hoppy beer, chillin' by river in the summer
