Advice Needed For Sending Cultures
    #1405124 -

A while ago someone asked me to send them a culture of an edible when they were ready. Well they are almost ready, but I have no idea on the best way to mail living cultures/agar wedges. Any advice/experience would be welcomed.

Mods: I posted this here as its to do with distribution, if you don't think its suitable please move it over to GQ.

Thanks

well, if you're sending international - usually the best bet is a wedge.. I just send my wedges in plastic baggies (zip type).. small ones. The thicker the better..

if you're sending a dish, just wrap it in bubble wrap, or cardboard. Or there are even petri mailers, but i doubt you'd want to go to that extent. In case you do... www.polyfoam.com

essentially you want to shelter the dish as much as possible from bumps and bruises.

if you're sending baggies, I like to send a baggie within a baggie, due to the fact sometimes they rip or break during shipping.

Besides that you can also use small plastic or glass vials.

Baggies are very good because they don't catch customs attention, but the cultures usually get there a bit squished.
Baggies with inoculated wood chips (Anno style) is also a very good method. It's small, doesn't get squished and you can make one petri out of each chip, even after several months of cold storage.

I?ve sent agar wedges in a small zip bag and a padded envelope to every continent(ok, not antarctis...) without problems.

They are really ramping up the Homeland Security BS over here right now. The problem is that, previously a customs investigation would not mean much, but now all the law enforcement agencys share information and more of it, so a tiny little customs investigation could lead to something mush more ugly.

But hey freedom is cost of "freedom" here in the good ole' US

An entire society built on fear and death.

USA to Canada and Vice versa are getting very picky about customs. They send u a notice saying "Im sorry so and so your Merchandise/Materials have been confiscated at the border" and it goes on, Coorporate bullshit at its finest, i bet you anything they just resell it all.
